Hello all - as we look to accepting a school for DD it seems that loomis accepts a lot / has a lot of incoming 10 th graders. Does anyone know why ? What is the reason for having new students come in at a higher rate in 10 grade ? Is it because a lot of freshmen who accept drop out ? Does the class size increase in 10 th grade ? Any other reason? Thanks in advance
Loomis is not unique in this. Many, if not most, boarding schools swell in 10th grade and has nothing to do with students dropping out. The reason is historical. In New England there are several junior boarding schools (as well as a smaller number of public middle schools) that have grades 7-9, making 10th grade entry the logical transition.
As a 10th grade applicant this year - sure didn’t feel like that.
I definitely can attest to this, I applied as an incoming sophomore and got in.
sports.
also it’s not unusual lol a lot of people applied first year and didn’t get in and want to try again, etc. there’s a lot of different factors. A lot of new sophomroes also tend to be repeats, so that may contribute to it too.
Loomis specifically just takes a lot more athletes so it makes sense
