Why does the SAT get more news coverage and discussion than the ACT?

For some reason, SAT is more widely taken around coastal areas of the US (e.g. LA, San Francisco, New York, Florida), whereas the ACT is more widely taken in the Midwest US.

I’m from smack dab in the Midwest and I still feel that sat is more popular. Then again my state is an anomaly. To the original question, I would guess its because the sat is simply older.

The SAT is older, and because the SAT is used to determine national merit.

Cheerioswithmilk, what state do you live in?

Indiana, land of corn. On wikipedia, you’ll see a map of state preference for ACT and SAT. Coasts prefer SAT, middle prefers ACT, except for Indiana where we prefer the SAT apparently.
