Why Duke?

I'm having so much trouble deciding whether to apply to Duke or Rice ED? i know it will be a win win situation for me, but hey, everyone wants to make the best choice, even if the difference is minute.

If i come to duke, I will be a premed majoring in biochemistry and probably markets and management studies. So how is biochem at duke compared to rice. And how is markets and management studies? Does the program reflect the highly ranked duke business school?

and if both programs are excellent, would it be a good idea to double major in those two areas?

Duke does not offer a major in markets and management studies. We only have a certificate. I believe that certificates are described as being a middle-ground between majoring and minoring in a subject. That being said, majoring in biochem and going for this certificate is definitely a possibility.

I'm not one to give you a pro/con list of the two schools, though, because I never looked into Rice. My list would be a bit biased, and all of the info on Rice would be stuff I could find on the college board website. :)

Does duke like to weed out relatively weaker premeds to boost their stats? Or are professors very supportive and are willing to go out of their way to help students in need by offering help after class, etc?

And what about the student body? are people supportive of each other? are they more competitive with themselves than with other people?

i don't know abot the premed stuff but i can respond to the other part of your post.

the duke community is extremely supportive. although it is competitve, people tend to study together, help eachother out, and share notes. it's not like it's a competition. people want to see their friends and classmates do well.

Duke Rocks Go To Duke

1.) Duke does NOT weed out. (I would be shocked if Rice does, either. Very few private schools do.)

2.) I do not believe Duke offers a major in biochem. You could major in chem with a biochem concentration, or you could major in bio with a de facto biochem concentration. Or you could go with Program II, but frankly that's a little more trouble than its worth for something like biochem. (It's more useful for a really unique field of study.)

As for Markets and Management, I frankly am not a fan of the program except in very specialized situations. I would go with either economics or public policy instead. I was a premed econ major, and that worked out well for me.

3.) Generally: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=11158&page=2 Pay special attention to posts #66 and #72.

4.) Faculty: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=179643

5.) Premed: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=147457

Oops, my bad about the biochem major... I just filled out a Duiki entry about the bio major, and one of the concentrations you can do with a bio major is biochemistry.

So, that's an option; majoring in biology with a concentration in biochemistry. I'm a bio major with a concentration in genetics (though you don't HAVE to have a concentration).

thank you so much for the imputs guys!

wow after reading those above links, duke...man.
