I was surprised at this too - my kid was out of college, working full time at a “real job” and living on his own. Totally self-supporting. But since he is under 27, we had to complete a FAFSA and NeedAccess profile. The latter was very detailed and not fun to complete! He got merit aid from his law school; the award letter came with his acceptance, so that was before any financial aid paperwork was submitted. But he also is covering grad school on his own, he would need loans; we had to do the FAFSA and NeedAccess. And just my luck - he will turn 27 two months before he graduates - can’t catch a break!
I totally understand that med and law schools don’t want to direct a bunch of free money to students with wealthy parents, and there are a portion of law/med students that do have affluent parents.
I remember at my son’s White Coat Ceremony, the school asked the audience for all the “parent-doctors” to stand up…and a good number of people stood up.
