Why is diversity good?

I said he must-n0t-be-named!!!

omgzz :@@

:P

Ah, Jared Taylor, a racist of the worst kind, who uses fake science to make his points

white supremists love him, so what does that say about the OP

http://www.adl.org/learn/Ext_US/amren.asp?xpicked=5&item=amren

i've learned more from the students at my diverse high school than from my classes, i think. i've learned not only about other cultures and religions, but also to tolerate and even celebrate them as well. you can't get that at a homogeneous school.

Let's posit for a moment that "diversity" is desireable inasmuch as it exposes students to different perspectives - although true diversity it seems should embrace much more than race or national origin. But let's assume that even under the most shallow definition of diversity it is desireable. The real question then, is, at what cost does diversity obtain? There are certainly costs in terms relaxation of admission requirements, programs to accomodate students, and the ancillary impacts of such programs. This is not an argument for diversity one way or another - but rather a call for an open examination of the data, those from private schools.

"It is for more perspectives. However, it does screw me over a great deal."

..doesn't this statement assume that all people who are members of the same race have the same perspective?? hmm..

just so you know who the OP admires:

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05023/446341.stm

What Taylor did not say, and what Honsberger didn't seem to know until I picked up the phone and called in myself, was that Jared Taylor believes black people are genetically predisposed to lower IQs that whites, are sexually promiscuous because of hyperactive sex drives. Race-relations expert Jared Taylor keeps company with a collection of racists, racial "separatists" and far-right extremists.

Taylor heads the Virginia-based New Century Foundation. Its board of directors has included a leader of the Council of Conservative Citizens, successor to the White Citizens Councils of the 1960s. A former board member represented the American Friends of the British National Party, a neo-fascist and anti-Semitic far-right group in England. Another board member is an anti-immigration author who has also reviewed books for a Holocaust denial journal.

(I judge a person by who they admire and believe in, so there you go) Jared is a racist who pretends not to be, and his admirers in the world are some of the most hateful people, and many, gee, love him, and they themselve are white supremicists...so the OP is in some lovely company

What rational justifications for the greatness of multiculturalism and diversity, aside from "mixing is good!" do you have?

[/quote]
physics class or math class I'm with you ... diversity doesn't add much to the mix.

How about in a goverment class with a discussion on the civil rights movement in the 60s? Would the discussion be the same if the class were all upper middle class whites and asians than if there were african americans involced inthe discussion also. What about involving women in the discussion about evolution of abortion rights?

And outside of class ... the arguments over pizza at midnight in your dorm will be a heck of a lot more fun the more viewpoints represented.

After my years at school I have to admit I'm at a loss to figure which of my cohorts were really underserving an only got in because of some unfair diversity program ... my classmates were overwhelming terrific and I have not a clue on what criteria they got accepted ... but I'm glad they were there to enrich my erxperience.

mmm, good points 3togo

This is nothing more than a bigot trying to present himself in a legitimate fashion. Present your points, although I doubt you will accomplish anything but the realization that you are not only ignorant, you are an idiot. Actually, with people like you, even that is doubtful.

Seersucker, are you arguing that trying to achieve diversity in college is a bad idea, or that the world/America/a city/whatever should give in and become a place where everyone's the same?

i dont think he's saying that diversity is a BAD idea, just that colleges shouldn't go out of their way to pick and choose applicants of different races.

Then he should be arguing about affirmative action.

Forced diversity comments give the impression that the OP would be against a thing like... integration of schools...

based on what citygirlsmom said about Seersucker, that could be the case

"I'll defend any of his points."

OK. Ill play that game!

First of all: Hitler wasn't a big proponent of diversity either. Do you admire him? Do you want to defend his beliefs?

2nd: This man states that that the founding fathers were anti-diversity and believed that homogeneous society was best. The founding fathers also had slaves and syphilis. Seriously, they were human! They had their flaws!

3rd: Early naturalization laws provided citizen ship only to "free, white males". Seriously you needed to be a "free, white males" to take a sh/it back then. Stop using 18th century legislation and mentality in 21st century issues.

4th: This man makes the observation that "the US is now more diverse than before, but, is also more hated". He doesn't blame this on the atrocious foreign policy of the US, or the fact that we arrogantly ignored the United Nations and overthrew an (albeit corrupt) sovereign nation, or the racist attitudes that many Americans still harbour (especially towards Muslims). He backs up his claim that the US isn't hated because of it's current war, using World War Two as an example. He states that even though we killed hundreds of thousands we were "beloved" at the end of the war. Sure, beloved among our white, Western European brethern, but I sure wasn't feeling any love from the Japanese or the Soviets...

All after 5 mins of listening... I need to stop because he is making me sick.

PS- I would love to debate this SOB

I admit it would be a more interesting discussion. To extend your example, suppose all of the above voted for (or supported) the same candidate in the last presidential election? Does racial diversity necessarily mean diversity of thought and opinion? Would a libertarian in the mix improve the discussion?

Diversity, obviously, isn't always a bad thing. It simply provides different viewpoints and different ideas (granted some of those ideas might be bad, but that's a different topic). I get the feeling the OP wanted to address a different issue but attempted to disguise it as diversity...

How does someone 'be' diverse? :P

"I get the feeling the OP wanted to address a different issue but attempted to disguise it as diversity..."

No this isnt a AA debate in disguise. The OP is either a Troll or a Psuedo-Neo-Nazi. Check this speech he is a fan of http://www.veoh.com/videos/v429231RSYHm6hf
