Why is diversity good?

Why is diversity good?

I think forced diversity is a sham. I'll elaborate later.

Uhhh, because a lack of it is boring and disturbing?

Group think people... group think.

some say having different perspectives equates to broader learning,

but hey why should colleges and the work place have diversity, its not like the

real world does or anything right?

"I think forced diversity is a sham."

Before you begin your rant - which is almost certain to end up as just another angry anti-affirmative action diatribe - I suggest you do a little research on the phrase "forced integration."

Perhaps you will learn something.

It is for more perspectives. However, it does screw me over a great deal.

The real world is full of a much variety of folks than those in the US suburb that you are probably crawling out of. WHen you get the dream job in i-banking that everyone on this forum seems to prize, you'll be astonished to find out how many of the people you work with, work for, or consult to, are non-native English speakers, Indiian, Latin American, African, female, German, Japanese, CHinese, Taiwanese, and Korean (and you'd better learn those differneces). Diversity at university serves to make you literate in getting along with others, you idiot.

Wow, so some here don't like people unlike themselves, becasue that is what it sounds like

If you had everyone in class coming from the same background, same skin color, same lives, there wouldn't be much to learn from other people

It like if everyone came in and only read the same books, in a very limited way, how enlightening is that

And if you don't think you interact with people from different backgrounds, how scary is that?

troll alert

This is just a stupid ass question.

Well, I like meeting people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. I like having friends who don't necessarily share my beliefs, ideas, opinions and who can teach me something / offer me a new perspective. I find it boring to be around clones.

Seersucker,

You've managed to start a thread and taint it at the same time. You are not going to get a meaningful discussion when you dogmatically state, "forced diversity is a sham." What are your motives here? It's time to elaborate.

Every study on professors' political contributions at top schools shows them going around 90-10 for Democrats over Republicans. Funny how those who are loudest about the need for diversity in terms of racist are quite confortable with monolithic group think in terms of ideas.

http://www.veoh.com/videos/v429231RSYHm6hf - If you have time, here is a 40 minute speech which pretty well summarizes a lot of my opinion on multiculturalism.

At least watch the first 7 or 8 minutes if you seriously want to discuss this issue.

What rational justifications for the greatness of multiculturalism and diversity, aside from "mixing is good!" do you have?

And I won't make this an Affirmative Action debate - those are usually about as fruitful as a debate on abortion. Also, I am in college, and don't really care about AA too much any more.

That man is disgusting. And so are you.

The fact that they couldn't find anyone to defend diversity at Clemson reflects very poorly on the university.

lilybbloom hit it on the nose.

I don't need to make any 'rational justifications' for diversity. It exists, and will continue to exist.

What are you suggesting, anyway?

These arguments against diversity remind me of the arguments of a mad man who must-not-be-named.

He acts like just because some of his points may be valid or hold some truth to it, makes it right. If you look hard enough you might be able to find some valid points in what Hitler preached but that DEFINENTLY doesn't make it right. Humans are held to a higher standard. While we may be at each other throats because of differences doesn't make this action right. We should strive to accept things that are different. Only when we do this will we be able to live as a "homogenous" culture, all of us Americans. This man disgusts me.

Thank you?

What "disgusting" things are being said? I'll defend any of his points.

Lmao, that kid introducing said numerous, well, numerous times.

And... that man is a DOUCH-E!

Hey! Hitler didn't like diversity either!
