Why is NYU the #1 school that high school students want to attend?

I got into NYU (i was invited to CAS reception) and I love NYU! I will probably end up going there but i was just wondering why NYU is #1 school that students want to attend.

NYU gives an education that's comparable to the Ivies and is located at the heart of the greatest city in the world IMO. That's why it's the #1 dream school.

It's only #1 for the students for whom it's #1. I know many, many students who couldn't care less about NYU (my d and most of her friends included).

I don't live in the middle of nowhere, yet some people in my school are like "NYU? Is that in New York?".

those people are called dumb people. haha.

lol. I'm saying. The next question is always whether or not NYU is private or public. Please people!!

I'm just curious whether you've got a stat or website backing that up, here in WI most everyone's dream school is UW Madison, even people who would be accepted at Ivies, NYU, etc, and recieve scholarships, UW Madison is their dream.

I second Hepstar's post. The school has amazing professors and its location is in the capital of the world!

DublinDoogey - yes, I've also heard that statistic.. i think it was a survey done among high school seniors a few years ago where they were asked if they could attend any school, regardless of cost or acceptance, most answered nyu.

ah, i found it - http://daily.stanford.edu/article/2005/4/7/nyuNamedTopDreamSchool

Cool, thanks :)

its the number 1 dream school because they survey people who DO NOT YET ATTEND, most of whom have an over-glamorized view of the city. Don't get me wrong, I like NYU a lot, but a considerable amount don't. If you ever wonder why NYU is rated so low compared to other schools in its SAT range, its the student surveys, people here like it a lot less than others like their top 25 universities . (aid and retention rate also hurt, but student surveys are a huge part of it).

I don't think NYU offers an "ivy league" education in the capital of the world - that's Columbia. ;) NYU is great though, but with ~20,000+ undergrads, you obviously won't get the attention and care that you receive at most ivy league schools (Cornell being the possible exception).

brand_182 - I don't think that's necessarily true - Ivy League schools aren't tiny LACs like Amherst or Williams... with any university you have to take the initiative to approach professors during office hours etc... and although I am not an NYU student (yet) the friends I have who attend all rave about the quality of academics there... but obviously I can't judge from just a few opinions. I think sometimes people attend NYU without realizing what it means to live in NYC and coming from a small town it may be a disillusioning experience because as mattistotle mentioned people do over-glamorize NYC sometimes... my friends are all from San Francisco and living in NYC isn't that drastic a change so their opinions may not be representative of the population... I guess we'll all just have to wait and see when we get there... just because its the #1 Dream School according to the Princeton Review website does not mean it will be for you or me or whomever... but then again it may very well turn out to be just that :)

mattistotle: why is the sat range lower?! b/c of steinhard/ nurse program/ gallatin etc... sat's dont even count of tisch. why don't you consider Stern, whose average SAT score this year was 1440. what's princeton's range?! 1380-1560.

brand_182: so can you see the similarity b/w an nyu education and an ivy education?! + don't forget that nyu's professors are also alumni of harvard, mit, LSE, cornell, columbia... etc... harvard's professors went to those schools, as well. what adds to nyu's good education, though, is the position. as ivy league schools give you a BRILLIANT education in theory- to some extent- (of course, i LOVE ivies), nyu gives you a more practical approach to life. this is especially true for Stern students. u can't deny the benefits of nyu for business = companies, nyse, nasdaq, madison ave, 5th ave, wall st... etc are all w/i a short distance of nyu. recently, i've heard that tuck(dartmouth) grad students come to nyc to get internships or to practice in their specific displines. there's the nyu advantage!!

fin. aid is terrible, that's true. but, as you said, 20000 students are a lot. and then consider this: a considerable part of ppl who go to Ivy League institutions are not in need of scholarships/ fin. aid. most of them can afford an education at those schools. ok, maybe not most, but a good part!moreover, donations to the schools MUST be pretty large!! therefore, ivies have greater endownments and can give more aid.

don't forget what Ivy League stands for: the league of sports. nyu doesn't have great sport teams. so what?! does that truly affect the education that you get in that school?! academics are not = to sports (even though that might be a + for ivies).

and another thing... isn't it great to be able to attract the attention of professors in a university which has 20 000 students?! that nurtures one's competitive spirit!! ;)

last... this is CC, brand_182! you cannot find a person here who does not know the difference b/w Columbia and NYU!! Come onnnn!!!!

I understand the defense of NYU: obviously I love it too as I'm applying! But it is not a top private school (yet) and so I think it is unfair to consider its undegraduate program comparable to an "ivy league" education.

On an international scale NYU certainly does not have the same name recognition as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc... but in all other respects I would say that it is equal to those schools. And within academic circles and grad schools you have just a good a chance of getting a high paying job / acceptance into law/med/business school etc. coming from NYU as long as you have a high GPA and all the other reqs.

brand_182:

that's true! you're right! i wasn't being that realistic, actually. :( it's funny how i defended nyu so passionately (for the first time since i got in. lol.) cuz usually, i'm the one who brings up the worst in nyu and talks about harvard 24/7.
sorry for my ranting... it happens sometimes (when i'm not having the best day ever).

haha... now i remember that you applied too. haha... from stats thread; that's y your nickname sounded familiar.

kulluca, sorry my statement was worded poorly, I mean in ranking, it is often rated worse than other schools with similiar admission standards.

STOP...
and please explain exactly why NYU is so wonderful... I REALLY need to know... Thank you!

nyu isn't that wonderful, people who haven't gone here yet seem to imagine some kind of utopia.
