Why is NYU the #1 school that high school students want to attend?

indianhillbilly:I agree that it’s become a top private school. Many of our programs rank very highly, not just Tisch and Stern. NYU is no longer the little brother of our uptown rival – we are peers.

However, I’ll have to disagree with the part regarding Ivy affiliation. Some of the NYU 2031 expansion plans are based on square feet per student or something, and the emails I’ve gotten from Sexton et al talked about ours related to those of Columbia, Yale, and Harvard. I think this provides poor justification for pouring our scarce endowment money into unnecessary and resented domination of the city. We SHOULD, in tough economic times or not, be saving this money to provide better financial aid to our students, but it is what it is. Our poor FA is the only thing holding NYU back from being truly tops.

ikatfabric: I’ve met many people at NYU in my time there so far. Many are great, a handful are awfully fake and downright nasty. I’ve had my good times, and bad, but everyone will, no matter where you go. Not every minute at NYU has been a dream come true for me, but it is definitely a place where I have grown a lot and am pretty happy. Living in and of the city with such a diverse group of smart, interesting students has surely taught me much more than being on a gated campus in the middle of nowhere. And the fact that our academics are superb just makes it all that much better.

I think NYU is love it or hate it. I definitely know some really unhappy students/alums there. NYC can be a very lonely place and with no campus, it can be easy to get lost. Personally I think its much better in your twenties. People who love NYU tend to probably be a little “sceny.” For some people its definitely the right choice but make sure before trying to go there you know how different it is from almost any other college in the country.
