Why is Rutgers so despised?

When was the last time any of the teams you just mentioned were even nationally ranked? (And I doubt anyone considering Ivies is going to care about Rutgers in the first place)

Of course Rutgers’ football isn’t that good but almost no schools in the northeast have had good teams

And if you want to base current football program perception on titles won in 8 team leagues the teams you just mentioned (specifically Princeton) have better programs than almost every team in the country including: USC, Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, and FSU

My nephew goes to Rutgers NB and loves it. I never thought bad about the school. In fact, I’ve always had a great impression of it. The kid is really happy there and can’t wait to get into the business college.

Among east coasters, it’s probably just a bias against public universities. Most west coasters have probably never heard of it. I know rutgers as a decent public school system within new jersey, and have a fair bit of respect for RNB. The rest of the system probably isn’t as respectable.

You mentioned “tradition/history in the Northeast” not current (or recent) rankings.

You just made my point, but I was not referring to national championships, not league titles. Granted, it was ancient history, but that is what YOU were talking about.

So you are claiming you didn’t say?

No one will ever mistake an ivy for a football school

No, I meant to type “but I WAS referring to national championships, not league titles.”

The ivy league teams dominated college football up until the 1920s, and were competitive with anyone thru the 1950s.

So you believe that Princeton’s program is better than USC’s?

I believe that they have a better football “history/tradition”, with 28 national championships: 1869, 1870, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1877, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1884, 1885, 1886, 1889, 1893, 1894, 1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1906, 1911, 1920, 1922, 1933, 1935, 1950.
http://www.princeton.edu/football/history.html

How many does USC have?

You just discredited yourself by saying Princeton has a better program than USC

Who cares about football, anyway? (And the direct quote is “a better football ‘history/tradition’” not a better program NOW.)

^^ Penn State does care about football.

The Ivies care about traditions relating to football, but not about the football itself so much.

I think people outside of New Jersey just don’t know a lot about Rutgers. I wonder if that would be different if it were called “The University of New Jersey.”

instead of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey? Could start a battle with tOSU for the use of that little “t” in front. On ESPN34 tonight, tOSU versus tSUNJ for the BIG68 title?

quote

[/quote]

Thanks. I gave up trying to debate barrk123. I guess he went to Rutgers and his feelings were hurt. :’(

Thats what program means

Either way his statement was laughable

It’s alright, xiggi. We will let Rutgers use the little “t” as tOSU upgrades its “t” to the Capital “T” in the coming future. It’s THE Ohio State University in the Capital City of Columbus, Ohio!! lol

On the football front however, tOSU is an all-time Top-5 Winningest Program in the nation, not sure about the Scarlet Knights.

Other sports: Final Four in Basketball & #2 in Directors’ Cup!! Go Bucks!! :)

High school students of many states romanticize the quality of out of state public universities. Some are not worth twice the price of their in-state choices.

I’m an in-state senior so I can speak to the attitude most kids have about Rutgers.

Campus looks really bland

The transportation system is supposed to be really annoying

Dorms and food aren’t good except at Busch, although Livingston is supposed to be getting a lot better

It’s kind of the go-to school for the dumb kids so none of the smart ones want to go

It’s expensive. 30k a year, which will only go up, is awful for a school like this especially when it’s so hard to get decent merit. Scholarship requirements are pretty vague too.

Sports suck

The infamous RU Screw

And what I think is really the overwhelming attitude is that nobody wants to stay in-state. Another poster mentioned that this attitude is changing but I haven’t seen that at all.

I think the only redeeming qualities of the school are its pharmacy, engineering, and philosophy programs.

But it does seem that most of the out-of-state publics that “anywhere but Rutgers” NJ residents are interested in are expensive ones like Michigan ($51,000), as opposed to those whose out-of-state price ($30,000 to $35,000) may be able to compete with Rutgers’ in-state price ($28,000) like Minnesota, SUNYs, NCSU, Virginia Tech, Cal Poly.
