I don’t understand why many colleges disregard the Writing section of the SAT. I think it’s important to be able to correctly form a sentence. I don’t think a required essay is sufficient because someone else could have written it.
Probably because colleges feel the writing section of the SAT is not indicative of writing requirements in college.
IMO
I feel that the reading sections aim to measure one’s ability to reason with what they’re told, and understand figurative language
And I think he math sections aim to measure logical thinking and reasoning, almost like puzzle solving
Whereas there seems to be no logic or reason involved with the writing sections. It’s simply a mechanical memorization of our language.
Maybe that’s because standardized tests are supposed to measure some level of organic intelligence and some colleges don’t see how the writing section helps gauge that.
Backward compatibility with old scores.
While the writing section has been found to correlate better with college performance than the other sections, that may be less true now that test prep companies have figured out how to game it.
It’s not important, but doing bad on it isn’t ideal. Colleges that say they only required the Math/Reading components don’t just get a partial SAT score report–they get the whole thing, writing + essay included. In past orientations, colleges have said they can’t just close the right side of their eye and pretend the writing score didn’t exist–that’s why it’s in your best interest not to bomb it.
