'Why NU?' essay and word limit

I notice that the 'why NU?' essay on the common app says in parens (250 words) but it does not truncate the essay at 250, but lets it flow over.

Does this mean there is a bit of grace for this and it is '250ish' words ?

or does it mean

that the NU application readers' have some sort of truncation filter that would cut it off summarily right at 250?

or

go over the 250 at your peril and it better be pulitzer prize winning quality to go over the 250?

If you’re close to 250 you should be fine. I don’t think they’ll just cut it off. If they do, it’s not like it will be missing much (because you shouldn’t go over too much).

Admissions has said “approximately 250 words”. Going slightly over is not a problem.
