Most of the freshmen advice I read mentioned rushing in the spring rather than in the fall. What are the reasons for this? I know that adjusting to the academic rigors of the college life would probably be one, but I intentionally took an easy schedule to free up time for a social life my first semester. Would it still be better to rush in the spring? Also, isn't frat rushing much more competitive in the spring as there will be a greater number of freshmen rushing then?

I suggest that you use your social time during the fall to get a feel around the place before committing yourself to a fraternity. It’s not a 4yr experience!

Once you have a few regular friends, understand the campus, and basically have a good idea on how things flow, then you can make an informed decision on joining a fraternity.

Nonetheless, it doens’t hurt to attend rush events now. Just don’t accept any bids until the spring unless you are ultra-sure about your decision.

Thing is, fall rush happens at the very beginning of the year, and with how the timeframe works, it’s ripe for premature decisions and things to go wrong.
