Why should I choose LSU over Auburn?

Thank you, Montegut. Don’t really hear much about Louisiana Tech. My D is from very much OOS in VA. Did not consider any schools in AL. Interested in the Architecture programs at both LSU and LA Tech. Has been accepted to both, but the budget cuts have put a since of doom and gloom on these 2 choices for her parents. Unfortunate because both were exciting choices for our D, esp. LSU.

Being from New Orleans, only really knew of Tulane’s fantastic architecture school. I honestly don’t know its status since Katrina, since Tulane has had its own cost cutting measures. The cost of tuition at Tulane, though, is considerably higher than LSU or La. Tech, and you won’t have the football atmosphere of LSU, as the games are played at the Superdome, not at an on campus facility.

FYI. Tulane’s Architecture school is doing extremely well, and getting national attention on several fronts. But no question, it is the most expensive and obviously the quality of the sports don’t compare to LSU. It is also a 5 year program, offering only the M.Arch. degree.

Thanks, fc, for chiming in here. Hoping to get your expert opinion. So glad Tulane still has its great architecture program. Tulane doesn’t really need to field a football team, though, since the World Champion New Orleans Saints play in its hometown!

True Dat!!

Greetings:

If both schools seem to meet your general needs, if I were you I would choose Auburn for financial reasons. If you really have no reason to prefer one over the other, choosing the school that will leave you with less debt is probably the smartest way to go. The other posters are correct about the significant budget cuts that LSU is facing - we just don’t know what the future holds.

I also humbly suggest that rooming with your friend is not necessarily the best choice - I’ve seen many friendships break up because rooming together is not always easy. Also, I rooming with your friend might make you less open to meeting new people in your dorm. Let the university assign you a roommate and see what happens - it might be a great way to meet new people and make new friends, which is a huge part of the college experience.

I know virtually nothing about LSU’s Architecture program, but more insight on LSU’s budget can be found here - [LSU Budget Information](http://www.lsu.edu/budget/)

You could also try to contact the school(s) with specific questions. Like budget cuts, no idea on what will happen, but there is nothing to lose by asking questions.

ULL does have a Petroleum Engineering program. I believe that it has been compared/contrasted with LSU’s program in the Engineering forum.

I know a couple of people in the architecture program, and they seem to speak highly of the job prospects of graduates. It is one of the most difficult majors at LSU, very time consuming. You have to be committed to stick to it, about half of those who start in it are out before the end of the first semester.

I imagine budget cuts should not hurt the arch. program too much because 1. The classes are fairly large and there is not a demand for too many faculty members to teach 2. Research is not really a factor, so that won’t drive away strong faculty or hurt the reputation the way a large cut to the sciences would.

I am just going off the little information I have though. I wouldn’t call my sources the most reliable.
