I really like Oregon. The campus looks beautiful the students seem motivated and forward thinking. But my parents have asked me why they should pay the out of state tuition. So yeah for people who know what are some tangible reasons I should go to Oregon?

Paying out-of-state tuition is a big financial commitment. You are asking a very good question: Are your reasons for going there compelling enough to warrant the costs to go out of state?

I think reasons good enough to answer the question for your parents aren’t going to be the general kind you might find on a board like this. Instead they should be very concrete reasons, such as a major department or academic opportunities you can’t find at an in-state school. Or concrete reasons why your in-state options are not good ones for you.

I love UO, and I agree with your assessment of the environment there, but as a tuition-paying parent, I can also completely understand why your parents are asking you to carefully consider your reasons.

If the money is there to pay for it, then choosing it just based on the kind of college experience you’d like to have, the kind of environment you’d like to spend the next four years in, then that’s one thing. It’s not that that’s a bad reason, you just have to weigh it against the financial impact it has on your parents.

Sorry, I didn’t answer your question, but I guess I just want to say that I think it’s a good one.
