Why So Late on the Roommate Assignments?

Why does Minnesota send out their roommate assignments so late compared to other colleges? All of my daughter's friends already know who their roommates are going to be at their respective colleges - some have known for almost a month now. Minnesota doesn't send theirs out till the end of July - they state that you should receive your roommate assignment by July 31st. Is there a chance it could be received earlier? Receiving the assignment the end of July doesn't leave much time for the kids to coordinate with their roommate as to who is going to bring what. Students/parents from past years, do they really wait until the end of July to send out the assignments, or did you or your child receive your assignment earlier? Also, does it matter if you requested to live in a LLC or just wanted a random assignment? My daughter requested to live in WISE - is there a chance the LLC's are sent out a little bit earlier than other assignments? Thanks in advance for any replies!

I got my assignment before July 31st, but only a couple of days earlier. This was two years ago now.

Move-in is during the last week of August. A month should be plenty of time to coordinate; if it takes longer, I think you are bringing too much stuff ;)

Agree, a month should be plenty. Often there is some summer “melt” anyway of the accepted students. If they give you roommate assignments early and you coordinate, sometimes that kid ends up not showing up in the fall anyway (this happened to my D1 at another school).

Thanks so much for the replies.

noimagination - Did you live in a LLC or did you just get a random assignment?

I know a month seems like a long time, but part of why my daughter wants to know her assignment is that she wants to know where she is living and if she will get her first choice. Plus, it is just hard for her to wait when her other friends at other colleges already know. I do understand about the summer melt though. I was mainly just wondering if she could possibly get her roommate assignment earlier, but it looks like it probably won’t be until the 31st.

Thanks again for the replies!

I can understand wanting to know the housing assignment. Did you pay your housing deposit when it opened up? We deposited in November and requested a LLC. We were told it shouldn’t be a problem for his first choice because we sent the housing deposit in so early.

LLC, not random.

The U starts fall term later than many places. That’s probably the main difference.

MTnext - We paid the housing deposit very early and in November as well. She knows she will probably get her first choice LLC, but she is excited about it and just wants to know.

Noimagination - I know, Minnesota starts a couple of weeks later than most other colleges. My daughter has some friends leaving the second week of August for their welcome weeks because their classes start on the 19th.

Thanks for the replies!

This will be my third year living in HRL at the U.

I remember that summer and I was getting really upset because all of my friends already had their roommate assignments and I got mine like July 30th. It ended up being fine.

Since you don’t move in until the last week of August that is more than enough time to figure out who is bringing what. It also ends up being the “back to school” time at Target and other stores so you can buy the stuff you need appropriately.

Last thing is that you will not get any information early. They do send it out in waves (like 2 or 3 days of e-mails) but in general everyone gets it around the same time. Even if you are in an LLC or applied to be in one, you won’t know until you get your e-mail at the end of July with everyone else.

Thanks for the reply, orion12. They sent the roommate assignments by email? I thought they said they send them out by regular mail? We prefer to receive things by email, so if Minnesota does send the roommate assignments out by email, then I am very happy to hear that! Thanks for the reply!

Nope, it is be e-mail.

Just remember that it is sent to her University of Minnesota e-mail address so your daughter has to log into that to check it.

Thanks for the info, Orion!
