Kind of a random question, but I was just curious about something. If a student does not plan on majoring in something math related, then why would any student feel the need to take calculus? Especially if the person hates math? Well, if you want to impress colleges then take another AP. I mean isn't Precalculus enough? Why go on? I'm taking Calculus because I'm planning to become an engineer, why are other people taking Calulus if they won't need it?

My d was admitted ED to an ivy without calculus. It conflicted with another class. She had another area of distinction .She was the only senior who was not enrolled in calculus at her school. She worked with a tutor outside school after completing precalculus accelerated but decided not to take the calculus ap this year because she already is sitting for four.

Because it's fun!
Or more precisely, it is infinitely more rewarding than algebra or, god forbid, statistics.
Also a pretty easy AP test...AB at least.

it actually makes sense and applies to real-world situations.

for example: calculating the volume of a donut. :)

To expose students to a higher level of thinking. My mom came into school as an art major. She only had pre-calc in high school, and did ok, not spectacular or anything. She took a calculus in college and aced it. She became a dual art and math major. You never know.

And because someone who does well in calculus will have a good logical/formulaic mind which is always good to have.

Haha precocious we all need to know how to calculate the volumes of donuts! :) You never know when it'll come in handy..

Well I'm planning on majoring in Literature and possibly minoring in math, but I'm pretty sure I won't really be applying calculus in my future career. I took it because I felt like I "should," not to impress colleges or anything but because I...wanted to. I don't know, maybe it's an urge to be "well-rounded" or something. At least that's just me.

Hmm... I think it's all about getting into college for some people.

At my school, most AP/Honors seniors usually take statistics or calculus. Some try to take both, but I just took stats.
