will not taking calculus in high school hurt my chances of getting into a college?

i just want to know what you guys think...

i don't like math, but i want to know if i don't take calculus if that would do anything to adversely affect my acceptance into some of the more prestigious colleges....

any help would be appreciated! thank you!

bumpty bump...... anybody, please?????

It might hurt you when it comes to colleges like HPYS.

It will hurt you virtually anywhere if you plan to major in a field like engineering, math or a science.

If you're planning on majoring in fine arts or the humanities, the lack of calculus may not hurt you at any colleges but perhaps the top 15 colleges. Just realize that if you go to college and then decide to major in a science or math-oriented major, the lack of calculus will hurt you because you'd be way behind your classmates when it comes to math.

Also e-mail adcoms at colleges you're considering applying to, and get their advice.

thank you!

It probably won't hurt if you want to major in something like english or music, but you should take it anyway. I'm not telling you this to give you better chances in admission; rather, I'm telling you because every human being should take calculus. Calculus is arguably one of the greatest "inventions" of the history of humanity. Also, in the last 9-12 years of your education, all the math classes you have taken have successively built you up for calculus--not taking calculus would be like ripping yourself off.

well, i never even took precalculus, and i was a reasonable candidate for the top schools. so unless you're planning to major in math/science/engineering, dont worry about it.

I think it would hender you. What would stop you from taking another math year? At my school, it is sort of required, though not directly, but everyone takes it.

ok, but i seriously hate math (ironic because i love computer science.... isn't it?)

definitely tke calc. i suck at math and im doing ok. its not that awful just take it your senior year just to get prepped for college

You're gonna have to take it in college anyhow...might as well get it out of the way, right?

It might hurt your chances for the hardest to get into schools if it's available to you because they generally want you to do amazingly well at the MRA (most rigorous available) courses. If you don't take it and instead pursue something you love, such as writing for the paper, creating the yearbook, or even something you're interested in academically, such as psychology or environmental science, it probably won't be that big a deal, and you may like this alternative better (because you will probably be happier with life and pursuing an interest).

You should find out if you have to take calc as a comp sci major. I would guess that the admissions people would want to see as much evidence of profieciency with numbers as possible, and calc is the usual best indicator (unless you have comp sci as an option). And if you do, doing well in both calc and comp sci would be better (unless you're the newspaper editor in chief instead, or something of that caliber).

Not neccesarily true. My friend only finished up to trig/ Precalculus and got into Stanford. (reason: He SUCKS at math... literally, his english/foreign language/ history GPA is 4.0, but in math/science, he barely gets above a gpa of 2.8 in math/ science related subjects. But he is possible the greatest writer I have ever seen and his writing is just phenomenal.
