Why W&M, as opposed to other schools?

Hi everybody,

So I applied to W&M RD, and, even though the decisions haven't come in yet, I'm fairly confident I will be accepted (knock on wood). Right now, I'm in the process of determining where is the best school for me and, after being glued to this page for a few weeks now reading nearly every thread to find out more info about W&M, I'm considering the school more of an option to attend now than I did before. However, I still have a few questions that I was hoping that this active CC community could answer.

If I attend, I would be majoring in Chemistry. I also have a huge community service interest and would like to Study Abroad during my time as a student. With that in mind, here are my couple questions.

•Is it possible to double major in the College of Arts and Sciences, or only Major with a minor?
•Approximately what percent of students study abroad during their time at W&M?
• What is the acceptance rate into Graduate School, and how many students go to grad school after graduation? (I'm considering either normal grad school or Medical school)
• Are there opportunities for internships at companies nearby?
• What kinds of clubs are students involved in after classes? (purposely broad question)

If you could answer any or all of these questions, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much for your time :)

You could probably find answers to a lot of your questions on the W&M website. Might be quicker than waiting for replies here!

My D knows the answers to all of your questions, but hasn’t been accepted yet, and knows the competition is FIERCE! She hasn’t forgotten one word of the tour: The Frats and Sororities are philanthropic in nature, so community service is a huge part of W&M focus. Yes, you can double major in the Arts and Sciences, although the guide did say that it would be more difficult if your majors are completely unrelated. Even though it’s a state school, the guide was pretty certain around 75% went abroad. Don’t think we ever got into the grad school acceptance rate, but it’s up there! Internships: oh gosh, yeah. Not directly down the street, like in DC, but still plenty of opportunities. Clubs; tons but don’t remember an exact number, the guide said anything you want to do you can find a club or make one! (My D could give tours too - I really hope she is accepted! It IS the right school for her, and she is the right student for W&M!)

you can double major

somewhere around 2/3 to 3/4, I believe.

obviously rates vary a lot across schools and programs. W&M has a strong reputation with graduate programs. I think the medical school acceptance rate is around 80%. Roughly 60% of W&M students go to graduate school within 5 years of graduation.

nearby in Williamsburg? Check the career center. Nearby in VA Beach, Richmond, or DC? tons

Thanks, and yeah I did do a little searching around the website, but couldn’t necessarily find too many of my answers. Rather, I found answers to other questions that I hadn’t necessarily thought of.

Keep the replies coming :)

You can double major (about one-third of our students do so) or major and minor. Our curriculum is fairly flexible and allows student to pursue mutliple interests.

Approximately 50% of W&M study abroad (meaning go abroad and take credit-baring classes) which is the highest percentage of any public doctoral granting university. When you add to that students who go abroad for research or service trips the percentages climb.

We do not have an exact grad school admission rate because it varies based on the program. About 1/3 of our graduates go direclty to graduate school and approximatley 60% go within five years.

The Cohen Career Center offers a local internship program during the academic year ([William & Mary - Local Internship Program](http://www.wm.edu/offices/career/undergrads/internship/lip/index.php)) and many students find internships in the summer all across the country.

There are over 400 student-run clubs, 23 DI varsity sports, club sports, intramurals and franternities and sororities.

If you are admitted, we encourage you to come to our Day for Admitted Students (about which admitted students will get more information). That day will provide sessions on academic advising, study abroad, career services, an activities fair and much more.

Thank you very much, W&MAdmission. Luckily, I was accepted and I look forward to receiving my admissions packet in the mail soon. I can’t wait to visit!

Fantastic. Might we recommend Day for Admitted Students. It should answer your questions and thoroughly showcases W&M!
