Why was I deferred?

Not that long ago Tulane used to accept 75%+ of its applicants. Not any more.

My D applied last year with a 35 ACT superscored and like a 3.93 GPA and got rejected. She did the why Tulane essay which was good and applied very early in the process. I think she may have been denied because based on her school activities she was a more conservative student whose EC’s lined up more with other schools she applied to. In any event she is very happy where she landed. It all works out in the end.

Haha. I am sorry if I came off that way. I am not entitled IRL haha. I just wrote that in the moment. (And in the moment all my friends got accepted ED to their schools and I was deferred by the first school I heard back from.) So, I apologize, I was just bitter and upset, leading me to be SO ANGRY at the world.
But, I appreciate the link.
Thanks

@mrc4081

I am glad you took my post in the spirit it was intended. The fastest way to the graveyard in admissions anywhere is to come off the wrong way. I completely understand your explanation, and I just don’t want to see a bad moment ruin your chances, at Tulane or elsewhere.

Does anyone know any stats about deferred candidates? How many applicants are deferred, what percentage usually gets accepted, that kind of stuff. They may not release it, but I’m very curious.

No idea at all.

Deferred. 2280 SAT 3.93 UW GPA. Am I still eligible for the partial merit?

@chromodynamics

Love the screen name.

Yes, definitely. If you convince Tulane that you would be more likely than not to attend if made an offer, that you aren’t really hoping to get into about a dozen other schools more than Tulane, then they would no doubt award you a strong partial scholarship. I am assuming you did not apply for the DHS or PTA?

I got deferred
ACT: 28 in reading but overall a 22
GPA: 3.7/4.0 and a 4.5/5.2

I took college engineering classes at Tulane this summer and earned college credit on there campus and still got deferred.

I am the president of a non-profit and have volunteered over 1000+ hours

Also I am on the Student Board of Education and the President of the Gay straight alliance at my school.

My ACT is lower because I am extremely dyslexic but my grades show that I am a hard worker. And I wrote my essay about volunteering which I know is a big thing at Tulane.

I don’t get it. I am so upset. That was my dream school. But I want Togo to a school that wants me. Not just to keep there sats high with ACT scores above a 30. They need to look at the whole picture.

I was deferred!
ACT: 32 (34 Superscore)
GPA: 3.53/4.0

Student Body President at my school. Started a non profit campaign.
2 varsity sports (Tennis & Track)
Founded the Model UN at my school
Member of many clubs (Key Club, Spanish Club, NHS, etc.)
Eagle Boy Scout
Volunteer in 3 organizations (Hospice, Tutoring and a Hospital)
I thought, and I was told, that my essay was amazing.

I am a little bit confused. I thought that I had a very good chance at getting in… Did I get deferred because of my GPA? Based off of their admission graphs, I did think that I had a good shot. Glad to see that I am not alone though haha.

@fallenchemist I did apply for PTA

This thread makes me feel a lot better. Deferred with 4.0 UW GPA, on track for valedictorian in large high school, 35 ACT, & NMSF.

And just to satisfy my curiosity, @savlam, where else have you applied, and what is your first choice, if you have one?

@fallenchemist So I had the crazy idea to apply 14 places (do not recommend) : American, Boston U, Centre, Columbia, NYU, Northwestern, Northeastern, Yale, Vandy, UIndy, Northern KY, Transylvania, Tulane, & UChicago.
So far I’ve been accepted to Northern KY (honors & full ride), UIndy (honors & almost full tuition), & Northeastern (honors & half tuition). I’m waiting to hear back from everyone else (except sort of Tulane).
My top few are American, Centre, & Boston. If I miraculously got money I would also love UChicago & the Ivies, but those are of course are a stretch for both finances and admission.

@savlam

Gotcha. Interesting array of choices. FWIW, I am impressed with Centre, a hidden gem as far as I am concerned. Well, maybe not so hidden as it used to be, but still a very nice school. And I think most people are unfamiliar with the fascinating history of Transylvania U. Was actually a very highly regarded school in its early days, and still is a very good school Per Wiki

But you appear to be from the KY area so you know most of this.

Anyway, You will certainly get into a number of those schools. As you say, financing is another matter. No question in my mind you must have fallen into the category of likely to choose elsewhere in Tulane’s estimation. If that is not so, certainly worth a shot at convincing them otherwise, especially if you applied for one of the full tuition awards. Assuming you applied, there is no reason not to make it clear to them that should you win one of those you would likely attend, again only if that is true of course. Just a some thoughts.

@fallenchemist I tried to apply to a variety of school types to see where merit aid fell. I definitely agree that Centre is a hidden gem! We’re lucky to have a school like that in KY.
I was wondering if there was a chance Yield Protection was at play here, but I didn’t want to make arrogant assumptions. Any tips for indicating interest (other than campus visits-too far) & possibly preventing similar issues with any of the other schools on my list? (Or are any others known for doing this too?) Thank you for your responses!

@savlam

I think yield protection probably is a factor, but I really believe that at the root of it Tulane is doing their best to insure that the highest stats students really want to be there, and not that they are just hedging their bets in case Columbia, Yale, Northwestern etc. do not come through. Those students are often not happy at Tulane, feeling like they have been forced to “settle”. It is hard to overcome such deep-seated negativity most of the time. Which is a shame, but it is a fact. I haven’t heard this so much about BU, but if there is another school on your list likely to feel the same way, they would be the ones I think.

As far as tips, just read this. He isn’t blowing smoke, this is really what they want to see if you are sincere about Tulane. http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2011/12/ive-been-deferred-now-what.html

Thank you so much! @fallenchemist
