I'm just wondering, prospective students and current students, what striked you the most about Wellesley, what do you like about it?

I am an alum, rather than a current or prospective student, but I will answer your question to give you insight. There are many aspects that still strike me about Wellesley: Wellesley’s strong sense of sisterhood, outstanding professors, motivated and bright students, diverse student body, breathtaking campus as well as supportive and accomplished alumnae.

Wellesley students and alumnae continue to inspire me. There is a sense of sisterhood that binds the Wellesley community— students, professors, alumnae— because Wellesley women know the power of a Wellesley education. My professors were engaging, passionate about their subject matter and dedicated to teaching. They really go out of their way for students, and even for alumnae.

Wellesley students come in all shapes and sizes, yet they have distinct common threads such as intellectual curiosity, a love for learning, a strong work ethic and an open mind. The school is very diverse compared to other selective liberal arts colleges and universities. My first-year for example, I recall having neighbors on my floor from Japan, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Canada, China, and of course states from California to Pennsylvania, and places such as the Appalachian mountains to cities like NYC. Living with people from around the world, opens your eyes and allows for deep discussions.

Wellesley’s beautiful campus with its architectural gems, manicured lawns and lake is certainly charming to the eye and a breathtaking place to spend four years. Being only 12 miles from Boston, I felt I had the best of both worlds. On the weekends, I loved going out to Boston with friends an then coming back to our peaceful, safe and gorgeous campus.

Last but not least, before I attended Wellesley I had heard of its alumnae network. I remembering hearing a few seniors speak when being interviewed by 20/20 (I was in middle school at the time) and I was impressed with them. They were sharp, articulate and had a strong sense of self. A few years later, I remember meeting an alum who also had the same self confidence and a strong mind,…I am thankful for all the role models and sisters I have through Wellesley. They are accomplished and supportive of students and alumnae. Hilary Clinton, Madeleine Albright, Diane Sawyer, Cokie Roberts, Linda Wertheimer, Opehlia Dahl, Madame Chiang Kai Shek, Laura Allen, Judith Martin, Ali McGraw, Nora Ephron, are a few examples of Wellesley’s accomplished alumnae. When I was debating job offers, I looked through the Wellesley Alumnae database to contact alumnae from the institutions where I had been offered a job, and despite not knowing these women, I called them up and asked for their honest opinion, the pros and cons of their work place, etc. They were very helpful and took time to answer my questions…there was an unspoken understanding that we all support each other like sisters.

Wellesley has a lot to offer such as the Wellesley in Washington internships, the Madeleine Albright Institute and so many opportunities to grow. Indeed, there are more aspects than I can write on this page, but I shared with you elements that strike me the most about Wellesley.

Thank you so much! The perfect response :)

What did you major in at Wellesley?

You are welcome! I majored in History and did a minor in Psychology. I was 2 courses away from a minor in Economics, but I deemed psychology more important for my desired area of interest after college, and chose to minor in Psychology.

Keep in mind, I went to Wellesley thinking I would major in Architecture and fell in love with History. I still love architecture. On the few occasions this year when I looked at the current Wellesley course catalogue, I was ecstatic over the courses offered to architecture majors including architectural history! Wellesley courses stretch your mind…it is a treat to look at the course catalogue and determine what my major would be today based on my current preferences. My professors were inspiring and challenged me intellectually while they conveyed mastery of their subject matter. Wellesley has a buffet of courses taught by outstanding professors that really care about their students’ development. If I had to do it all over again, I would choose Wellesley again!
