Back in the day, when BS was not an option for me and my family, I used to work ahead in Math also on my own, but turn in all my extra work to my teacher. One day, he just told me to close my book and get up and follow him. He walked me down the hall, and without a word, opened a door and pushed me in. I found myself in the highest level Math class in the next grade. And that was it. Without even a word. I guess that’s how frustrated teachers dealt with it back then. circa 1971
Lol. I had a similar experience in early elementary school in the mid-1970s. The teacher put a chair in the hall, gave me some more advanced materials, told me to work at my own pace and then sent me out of the classroom. Best thing that ever happened to me, honestly.
@preppedparent and @SatchelSF, I wish my teachers were allowed to do that, but I’m in the highest class in my school and still bored, and I think it would look bad to have one student working independently in the hall. Ah well. happytimes, your child and I sound like we have similar experience in our math classes, I feel the same way they do. I hope wherever they end up next year they are challenged. (Also, just found out that they took away the skip test that lets kids skip math levels in high school will be taken away tarting my year. Yet another reason why I want to get away from there)
@FunintheSun1211 Yep Just discovered other things related to public school curriculum that will hold kiddo back. I wish they would just place kids a year or two ahead. Hard for parents who have to advocate for their kids. Fininthesun don’t give up! If you end up local, I swear there are places where you can get what you need.
My public school doesn’t allow recs at all. And I’m not even in the top math class, because they have a required seat time before I can move to Geometry. It’s so dumb
What did you do for the recs than?
All my schools were very understanding. I was able to get a note from my guidance counselor and I also emailed my district attorney about the policy and forwarded our correspondence. Andover promised they wouldn’t take off for it and Baylor and McCallie have already accepted me and consider me for scholarship so I know they were fine with it.
Some concerns they had and reasons why they still accepted were briefly explained in the acceptance letter.
@doschicos This makes NO sense. I had a friend kicked out of Thacher this year. everyone loves him. Adults, kids, teachers. But they have a zero tolerance policy. Its not “Everyone who breaks the rules is kicked out EXCEPT the nice kids.” References matter getting in. They won’t keep you in if you violate codes of conduct.
Why are you tagging me? Where did I say anything that references don’t matter?
I was agreeing with you. You questioned the comment made by @center regarding references.
Oh, okay.
