I got a 2 on AP Chemistry last year. I have taken several other AP tests and all other scores were 3's, 4's or 5's. Will the 2 negatively affect my chances at admission to a school like Berkeley or Georgetown?

Unless the college/university specifically requires that you report all of your AP exam scores, you don’t even have to let them know that you did take the exam.

No doubt a 2 was a disappointing result, but as happymom said you are better off not reporting that 2. It wouldn’t help your app to include that result.

Your question is really whether failure to voluntarily report an AP test score will hurt your application when your transcript will show you took the AP level class. I think so long as you are able to report a good number of other strong AP scores and assuming your grade in the particular class was good, absence of the AP test result should make no difference to the admissions decision. That advice assumes you still earned an AP Scholar award that can be listed in your app.

Students often fall ill and have personal concerns that impact a single test result. So long as your other APs and your transcript are strong, leaving this score off your app should make little or no difference.

Thanks for replying!
If I do decide to report the 2, instead of leaving it out, will it negatively impact the application?
It’s the only bad AP score I have, all the others average out in between 4 and 5.

Yes, the 2 would negatively impact you, at highly selective schools. You are better off not reporting it. Many schools do not require students to take an AP exam even if they took the course, so the school may think you did not take the test.

The general rule is, you report nothing less than a 3. At some schools, you report only 4’s and 5’s. Since AP scores generally aren’t used to determine admission, leaving out a 2 in a slew of other scores will likely never be noticed, and if it is, they don’t necessarily assume you scored poorly, they also understand if you have a number of AP tests to take, you just don’t feel like you can study for them all, so may not have taken that particular one.
