will a highschool suspension hurt me a lot?

I have been recently suspended from school because I looked at other people’s grades on a database. I did not do any harm of anysort. Could you please tell me if this suspension will hurt me a lot? thank you

ps - sorry for posting the same message in a different section

I answered you on the other section.

I am sorry, but I think it will hurt you -- a lot. Did you hear the news about Harvard rejected people because they looked at their admission decisions online early?

" I did not do any harm of anysort."

I think you need to do a bit of soul-searching, here. Yes, this will hurt your admissions to many schools - perhaps not all, if you can figure out why your statement above is untrue.

i think the OP meant that he didn't change anything.

i think everyone is exagerrating your suspension a little bit. It obviously won't look great but i don't think it will hurt you a lot. I would try to emphasis your integrity on other aspects of your application and maybe show how you have grown from the expierence.

I think it will hurt you a lot. Even if you only looked, you were invading others' privacy. In addition, for all the colleges know, you planned to do more than just look.

I agree with the person who posted that your best chances of getting into some colleges would be after figuring out what was wrong about what you did, and making sure that you explain this to those colleges and include how your behavior has chanced for the better since.

It also would be wise for you to apply to colleges that make admissions decisions mainly by stats. Those tend to be in- state public universities.

It'll hurt, but don't worry if you don't get into where you want to go, you can always transfer.

BUT WHY?!!!!! why da hell would you look at other people's grades? it will definitely hurt. About your suspension, you better have a good explanation.

how do colleges know, besides the self-report that u were suspended?
i dont think it shows up on transcripts

And isn't it illegal too? But yeah.. it's gonna hurt. And I agree; give a well thought and reflective explanation and highlight whatever positive aspect of it.

"how do colleges know, besides the self-report that u were suspended?"

Well, it does show on the transcript for some HS. Besides, some colleges would call your counslor and find out more about you. You shouldn't lie about it. Because when they find out, no college would ever want you.

wouldn't worry about it too much, approach it in a mature manner and see what happens. my friend got had some drug-related things on this record and he got into some top 20 unis.

There is something though about going into a school database, its a kind of cheating and what were you thinking? Out of curiosity, why did you look?

You need to really step up and do whatever you can to acknowledge what happened. Privacy was invaded and just because you didn't change anything, was the capability there? If I was your mama, I would send you to your room for a year...

You need to learn to use your brains for good, not dumb ; )

Anyway, your life isn't ruined, it may have taken a step sideways, but don't make excuses, show you know what you did was serious and you are soooooooooooo sorry...that can go a long way. See, how you handle the punishment and the seriousness of your actions will have a huge impact on the GC and Admin at your school- #1youthful mistake he feels really bad about but basically a good honest kid- or - #2well, he still thinks he did nothing wrong and didn't learn anything and could well repeat it- you want your GC and Admin to say # 1...remember they will be writing recommendations and your maturity of how you deal with situation and your actions will affect how GC treat you afterwards with regard to that. Human nature. If they see you are truly sorry and remoreseful and keep the straight and narrow from now on....

What grade are you in?

What you need to do is take the suspension, but have your parents argue not to have this put on your transcript.
My friends son was suspended for alcohol in his backpack (he didn't drink it and also said it was someone elses who knows). My friend fought tooth and nail to get the suspension removed from the transcript. It worked, but took months of pleading, calling etc. He still had to do the suspension. He is graduating in May from Syracuse (where of course he joined a frat :) )

While I do agree it was not a good move on the OP's part to look at the database, I think many of you are being a little harsh. We don't know all the facts. Was it available on a computer to which he had access? Obviously, the school doesn't regard the offense as TOO serious or the punishment would be more than a one day suspension. I think a candid conversation with the guidance counselor and a written apology is in order.

It depends. If he was an office aide and he was peeking on the computer at the wrong place at the wrong time, then perhaps. Maybe he had an administrator's password which he wasn't supposed to have?

I'm a counselor's aide. I stare at grades all day long. I pull up student report cards on the computer right in front of our principals, and don't get in trouble because, well, that's my job. So, no, it's not illegal for one student to look at another student's file, just as long as the student is SUPPOSED to be looking at that student's file.

What does "I did not do any harm of anysort" mean? Why were you looking at someone else grades?

Our valedictorian was just suspended because her cell phone fell out of her backpack... really stupid but still a two day suspension. I think in your situation, if colleges find out(which is not a given) it will hurt. If there is more to the story you might be able to get away with it but maybe not.

uhhh was the cell phone a bomb in disguise or what? i dont understand what the punishment is for?

At our school you can't have cell phones... you have to keep them in your car but because she didn't drive that day she stuffed it in her backpack and it fell out... it happens all the time at our school... stupid suspensions.
