will bad CR section of SAT harm my chances for engineering?

for math, i got well above the average (760), for writing i got right in the average (610), and for reading, i got slightly below the average (520). should i consider retaking, or is it simply not worth it? (i dont plan on applying to a college more competitive then UT)

What is your class rank, and are you a senior now?

When we met with the admissions people in engineering, they told us that though they don’t “superscore”, they will take the test with the highest math score, even if the composite is lower, since math is what is most critical in that major. So, with a 760 math score, you may well be fine. If you are a junior, you might as well take it again, and take an ACT as well, chances are your critical reading score will go up. If you’re a senior, it’s too late to take it any way.

im a junior and im in the top 8% of my class (barely)

I would try taking the ACT since you have plenty of time. It is scored differently and alot of students do better than the SAT. UT will convert the score to an equivilent SAT score. They will always use your highest score, so it certainly won’t hurt you. As far as engineering, it probably depends which dicipline you are trying to get into. I know chemical said they usually take about the top 5%, not sure about the others. Having really good test scores will definitely help!

As a junior you need to be guarded about your 8% rank. The Texas legislature passed a new law that allows UT Austin to cap its top 10% enrollment to 75% of the freshman class starting in Fall of 2011. UT Austin has to notify counselors of what that rank % cut off will be to fill that enrollment number. (I believe that happens May 2010) They are projecting that will be the top 8%. When they make the decision on the rank percentage, they will accept all students up to that % even if it goes over the 75%. So if UT Austin says we will take the top 8% and it fills 75.5% of their enrollment that is how it will roll. With that said the 9% & 10%'s will not longer be “safe.” So get your grades moving upward and get in the top 6 or 7% to secure at least your acceptance.

alright, thanks a lot guys :D. btw, i took a practice act and scored a 30. if i take the act, can i send that score and sat 2s, but not my sat reasoning score?

Yes, they will accept either the SAT or ACT. Like was said above, they convert your ACT into an SAT equivalent score. You can find the conversion table on both the collegeboard website or the ACT website.
