Vandy gave me roughly $40,000 / year. Brown gave me about $20,000. I know Brown won’t completely match Vandy’s, but what are the chances that Brown will give a little bit more?

Thanks.

They might give you a little more, but you have to realize that much of what Vandy is giving you is merit-based aid. The Ivies only give need-based aid. In the same way that Brown will not match your full ride to "Big State School", they will not match it at Vandy. because merit based aid is more than you need.

Where are you planning to enrol?

...not terribly likely unless you can demonstrate you "need" more
even though vanderbilt is a good university it isn't competitive w/ brown in cross-applicants. strategically speaking, the university can make more effective use of their fin. aid money by matching an offer at harvard

This whole matching thing is a myth. The ivy leagues have a formula for aid and stick to it. If there's wiggle room within the formula you may have a chance to squeeze out 2k more in loans or something. Furthermore, Brown isn't going to consider any non-ivy league or M or S etc on par.

it's not a myth. brown has a policy of matching offers from the other ivies + stanford and MIT. offers from other schools are examined on a case by case basis

The "matching thing" is not a myth. As dcircle says, this is a specific policy that Brown has.
