Will Bryn Mawr look down upon a religious studies major?

I originally posted this under the Women’s College section. I now realize the thread should be on this forum.

If I am applying to Bryn Mawr, and I list my top interest as religious studies, will it lower my chance of admission? I am wondering this because religious studies is a major that is technically not offered at Bryn Mawr. I’d be studying religion at Haverford. Would the fact that I’d be majoring at Haverford affect my chances of getting accepted into to Bryn Mawr?

I also plan to major in bio (neural and behavioral sciences)/environmental sciences (though I know it is a minor at BMC)/English

Hi there!

I wouldn’t worry about majoring at Haverford. I’m sure it won’t affect your chances of getting in. After all, one of the perks of going to Bryn Mawr is taking advantage of the bi-co, tri-co, and Quaker consortiums. A friend of mine who graduated last year (I’m a current student at BMC) majored in Religion Studies at Haverford, loved the major, and had some amazing study abroad experiences through both Bryn Mawr and Haverford colleges. She studied abroad in Nigeria through BMC and in London through the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship at Haverford. Now she’s working as a paralegal in NYC and preparing to take the LSAT.

I myself am a neural and behavioral sciences concentration at Bryn Mawr and I have really enjoyed all of my classes in that field.

If you have any questions, feel free to respond to this post and I will get back to you.

Best of luck!

Thank you so much for answering this! I have two more questions:

How would you rate the academics at Bryn Mawr as compared to Haverford? Are there any major differences?

As a neural and behavioral science concentration (possibly what I’d like to double major in) have you had any study abroad or fieldwork opportunities?

I would not be concerned at all. The Bi-Co, Tri-Co, and Quaker Consortium are wonderful resources that students love to take advantage of and the administration encourages! For example, if you were an applicant to Haverford and put History of Art, Geo, or Italian as a prospective major, you’d be receiving your major degree through Bryn Mawr. These are only some of the major departments that are shared between the two (or three, for linguistics at Swarthmore). Our cities department has also elicited applicants to Haverford just so they can major in this Bryn Mawr-specific program.
