Will Colleges Accept Candidate with Few Extracurriculars?

Hi!

I'm currently a rising junior at a competitive high school. My grades are relatively high I am pretty strong academically, but I have very little extracurriculars. Sure, I'm involved in several clubs, but feel like I'm just a "member.” I wasn't able to participate in many events last year because of scheduling, and I wasn't able to volunteer much, getting only the bare minimum for hour requirements.

Do I have a chance of getting into a selective college (such as Emory or Vanderbilt) if my extracurriculars are weak but my academics are strong, and I have a few prestigious honors/awards? Thank you for reading this!

This is just my opinion- but your ecs sound really great to me (yes those things you listed are what I would consider ecs)

Thanks for your opinion, kanick!

A for effort. F for confidence.

Is this a disguised bragging thread? If not, your extracurriculars are damn great, you haven’t a thing to worry about.

What colleges are you aiming for?

paragraphs please

Emory and Vanderbilt aren’t state colleges, nor are they semi selective. They are highly selective.

For Emory or Vanderbilt I think these ECs are fairly competitive. If you’re from George Walton Comprehensive, Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology or a good private school, more might be expected of you, but it is not likely.

I think the problem is that your activities are not focused. You have drifted along in some activities without ever creating a common theme to or being passionate about any of them. This might preclude you from getting into some Ivy League-type schools, but you should be good for Vandy and Emory.

Vanderbilt and Emory are private schools and are considered “selective.”

Chance me back?

Try to arrange your ECs to tell a story about you and have them tie in to your essays. You application is your marketing material about yourself. If you have too many ECs, put all volunteer work together, arts/music together, and try to write a little blurb about each section, don’t just list the organization/club name.

Emory: Aim for 31+/2100+
Vanderbilt: Reach (aim for 33+/2200+)

Thank you all so much for your feedback!
By semi-selective schools, I meant colleges like Valdosta, UGA etc.; I think I accidentally gave Emory and Vanderbilt as examples when I was meaning to state them separately as more selective colleges.
And DenisRS, this is not a disguised bragging thread, although it may seem like so…I’m genuinely worried, and this year has been stressful for me because many of my senior friends were not accepted into the colleges for which they were aiming, despite their academic achievements and high test scores.
Again, thank you!

Do you have any idea what the admissions criteria are for Valdosta State? What are you talking about with “semi-selective”? I think you need to reevaluate where you stand in what schools you can get into.
