Will colleges take extreme situations into consideration?

Is there a way to apply for financial aid for extreme situations? Both my parents had to quit their jobs last year, my dad because he developed cancer, and is now given less than a year to live :( and my mom because she needs to take care of him.

Between medical bills and my sister and I there isn't any money for me. I'm basically on my own here. Do colleges take this into consideration? I go to UCSD, if that helps... my finaid app was chosen for verification and they told me that I won't be awarded aid until summer (mid July) and that at the very least I will be eligible for loans (which I will take as a last resort). Thanks.

You should certainly talk to them and ask for professional judgement. Unfortunately the UC’s are not schools that meet need and are in the middle of a budget crisis. They can determine you have need and still not come up with money for you.

Medical bills are something that can be used in a professional judgement situation. Contact your financial aid officer ASAP and explain the full situation and ask what you must provide in the way of supporting documentation. My daughter had an adjustment made for this reason her freshman year. We had to provide copies of all the medical bills and show what part was un reimbursed by insurance. We were also able to include our insurance premiums and any prescriptions we had paid for out of pocket (copays etc). When the adjustment was approved the financial aid office went in and adjusted our income figures which caused her EFC to go down making her eligible for more aid.

Sorry your family is going through this. Good luck…

Depending on how recently your parents had to quit their jobs, you may also receive an income adjustment (not guaranteed, but possible). Gather your parents’ last pay stubs, current income info (if any), and a detailed letter explaining the situation. Get your medical bills together, as well. Definitely talk to your financial aid department … chances are they have a form developed for this purpose that you can fill out.

My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. I do hope that you can receive some assistance.
