Currently a senior in high school and one of my first choice schools is Columbia University. I would like to attend as an engineering major. I feel like I have a good list of classes (Apush, AP CALC, Ap Bio, etc). My extracurriculars include NJOTC, Peer leadership program, national honor society, as well as society of Hispanic profession engineers. My GPA stand firm at 4.311 out of 5 and i’m number 6/823 in my school. My High School is a high needs urban school. I scored a 700 in math and 640 in reading/writing on my SAT. Do I have good chance at getting into columbia university? Are there any other schools that fit my stats better (preferably an urban school) Any advice would help!! Thank You
Hi there,
Your GPA and high school ranking is great. But your SAT score is quite low for Columbia, even for a hooked applicant with URM status. Have you taken subject tests? Columbia recommends two, although you don’t need them to apply. I think you should focus on schools such as NYU, BU, and BC (which is a bit more removed from downtown urban areas of Boston).
Great suggestions for other options provided above!
As of last year, Columbia changed it position on SAT Subject tests from “recommended” to “optional”. That being said, echoing the above post, your SAT score is a bit low.
