My son is a high school Junior and taking Math 114 (Calculas II - Multivariable and Vector Calculus) and Math 240 (Calculas III- Differential equations and linear algebra) at University of Penn as part of young scholars program. He expected to earn ‘A’. He might complete 2 to 4 more advance math classes at Penn before his high school graduation.
My question is if Princeton admits him next year, will he get a credit for these since he earned these during high school days?
(Penn will give all the credits if he accepts Penn.)
No. It is unlikely, though, that he would need to retake the Princeton version of Calc 2. It is extremely unlikely that he will be able to place out of higher level courses, but will, most likely, be “recommended” to take one of the 215-217 or 216-218 sequences. Princeton is not alone in feeling that once the intro calc courses are out of the way, they want the student to learn “their” way of doing math. Of course, he needs to be admitted first.

Harvard is the same; it will accept pre-college Harvard credits, but won’t accept credits from any other college.
No. My D took classes at UPenn as part of the High School Honors program and no credits transfer. She took Math 114 which UPenn calls Calc 2 but is Calc 3 everywhere else. She decided to take Math 203 at Princeton which is more of a proof-based version of Calc 3. Math 204 is the more proof-based LA. I’m not sure how he pans to take higher math classes (Summer School?) but if he does he might want to take Math 215 Honors Analysis at Princeton or 216 Accelerated Honors Analysis as many Math/Physics major Freshman take those.
@skieurope : Thank you for the response. I hope that he gets into Princeton. He has good credentials(math olympiad national ranking, acing SAT at middle school, grade skipping, HMMT ranking, Chemistry olympiad national qualifier…) But Princeton is reach for everybody :(-)
@Dolemite: Thanks for the response. I will advise my son.
You’re welcome. If you have more questions just send me a PM. My D has several friends that are Physics or Math majors and took either the 215/217 or 216/218 sequence. I can always pass them on to her.
@Dolemite: Thank you. When he gets an acceptance, I will contact you.
