Will getting a C in a language class affect my chance at applying for a linguistic major?

•I got a C in Spanish 2 and 3 in 9th and 10th grade
•I have learned German on my own outside of school
•I am currently studying Russian out of school
•my overall GPA is about 3.6 and has an upward trend
Knowing all this would applying to a linguistics department be a bad idea?

Also I do not plan on specifically studing spanish as a major

Where are you applying and what specifically are you interested in (linguistics is a VERY broad field)? I think that most programs will not take those grades as an indication of your aptitude for linguistics because foreign language classes usually don’t even count toward a major in linguistics. It might depend on the school, though. I’m a graduating high school senior who will be majoring in linguistics btw.

When I was a freshman and sophmore I took spanish and while I tried my hardest in that class I ended up with a C for both. I have continued to practice spanish and have also taugh myself German and am in the process of learning Russian (out of school)

I wanted to gonto school in linguistics or a field related to languages. Will those Cs affect my chance of being accepted into that? Remember I have drastically improved my spanish in the 2 years since I took the class as well as learned/learning 2 additional languages

Some schools in Virginia (home state) like William and Mary and George Mason ,some UCs , Rutgers, and a few top schools as a stretch, probably either sociolinguistics or applied, that makes sense, what college are you going to and what specifically do you plan on studying if you don’t mind me asking?

I’ll be attending Northwestern, and I lean more toward the theoretical side of linguistics. I’m not too familiar with the admissions process at the schools you mentioned, but your chance of admission will probably be more based on your overall stats regardless of which major you intend. If anything, linguistics might help because it will help you stand out from a sea of bio majors.
