Will he get in somewhere?

Son applied for Mechanical Engineering at the following schools:
Cal Poly SLO
Cal Poly Pomona
San Jose State
Santa Clara University
UC Riverside
UC Irvine
UC Davis
UC Santa Barbara

His stats: Eligibility index for CSUs: 4336 using SAT, 1050 with ACT
SAT I: 770 M, 620 CR, 560 W 1950 total
SAT II: 730 Math, 690 Physics, 650 Chem
ACT: 31 composite (34 in Math)
GPA: 3.67 UC/CSU, 3.8 cumulative
Varsity track all four years. Eagle Scout.

We’re relatively sure he can get into San Jose State and maybe CPP with those stats, and would be delighted with those choices. Riverside’s a possibility too. But the Cal State/UC system is so very competitive, especially for engineering. I don’t anticipate that SLO will come through, but we’re hopeful. The test scores are relatively decent, but GPA might bring him down, especially at the UCs and SLO. We loved Santa Clara, but it’s a matter of whether they will offer some $$, as it’s a pretty pricey private school.
Son doesn’t seem the slightest bit concerned. It’s his mother who is freaking out until he gets that first acceptance…somewhere!

SJSU/CPP: Match
UCR: High Match
SCU: High Match/Low Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB/SLO: Reach

The EI threshold for ME at SJSU was 3800 last year, so he has an excellent chance along with Cal Poly Pomona. I think UCR could go either way, but his test scores still make him pretty competitive. SCU is not known for being generous with FA.
For the rest of the schools, his GPA will hurt his chances. I am sure he will end up at a school where he is meant to be.

You may want to check your son’s portals. People are reporting admissions results for CPP and SJSU.

Thanks, Gumbymom. I agree, I think he’s good to go for SJSU/CPP. And if he doesn’t, we have an excellent community college here. I know the GPA is not ideal. LKnomad, we’ve checked the portals: still say “ready for decision!” I’m thinking the high stats students are notified first, so it might be a couple more weeks before we hear anything. ARRRRGGGHHH!

Good luck. This is such a tough time for parents and students! Hope things work out as you and your son would like.

Happy to report yes, he did get in somewhere. UC Riverside and San Jose State! Wait listed Colorado School of the Mines and Cal Poly Pomona. Rejected everywhere else. But Riverside and San Jose are good options…now to decide!

San Jose State is a great school!

Congrats to your son, I have a question, Did your son take any AP classes and if so which ones?
