I'm currently a junior and took the SAT for the first time in December. I got a 540 on math, 660 on critical reading and 640 on writing. Im also in National honor society at my school and have been involved in soccer since freshman year (though i dont plan to continue it in college). I'm also in Spanish Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), and am involved in a volunteer charity organization. I am in the top quarter of my grade and maintain an A average. What are my chances of getting into Texas A&M, University of Arkansas, or OSU? I'm worried because of my SAT math score which is considerably lower than that of many students that got into these universities. (I read that 50% of those admitted to A&M make a score better than a 540 in math.) Should i retake the test...or do the better than average critical reading and writing & class rank cancel that factor out? Any input is greatly appreciated!
Also, is the ACT worth taking? or do colleges really put more emphasis on the SAT?

Take the ACT, and retake the SAT.

I would try to put in the extra effort for your personal statement considering the mediocre scores...

UOA is probably a match though.

Howdy, I think that you would have good chances at these schools. It may matter more as to what your major would be (math based vs non math). Your total SAT scores are good for these schools. Plus A average and top quarter are impressive. I wouldn't be surprised if you got into all three. Also, if you are talking about Ohio State, I know of someone with similar stats and scores (sligthly higher math score) who got into OSU. I do agree with HSisoverrated about taking the SAT again and also taking the ACT. Most schools will mix and match the scores and take your highest math/english/writing score anyway.

I meant Oklahoma State University. Sorry about the confusion but thanks for the input! (:

Howdy, you are in at OSU.

I would retake the SAT, BUT I think you'll get in. I got in to U of Arkansas & A&M, and my SAT wasn't super amazing. Just have a good class rank/ GPA and have some extracurriculars, which you seem to have ! (: I am top 10%, but I know people in the top 25% who got into U of A and my friend who was like top 50% got into OSU.

If I were you, I'd just focus on the SAT. Why deal with two tests? Take the ACT once to just give it a shot, but if you do mediocre on it... I dunno, I would just pick the test you like the best and focus on just that, and since you've already taken the SAT once... Also, many schools on the east and west coast like the SAT. Giving yourself some flexibility would be nice...

You are definitely in at the U of A with what you have right now. But, be warned... UA prefers the ACT. I have only taken the SAT and, yes, I got admission, but they put me in remedial classes for my freshman year in college. It's odd to me... They say it was because of my low standardized scores. So I guess that means my SAT scores... But I have a 600 and over in all three areas... And I have a 4.1 GPA and I'm the valedictorian from a class of 380... In-stater... Taking IB courses, the most challenging courses available. Just doesn't make sense, but... I dunno. If that's one that you are really considering, then you might want to take the ACT for sure. If you get a 28+ on the ACT, then welcome to Scholarship Land.

I'm pretty sure that you're in at OSU as well. Good chance at A&M as well. Just work on that SAT score. :)

(Sorry for the long reply...) :P
