I’m a senior in highschool and I currently have a 3.23 gpa (3.3W) and a 23 ACT score. I know my grades aren’t that good but I didn’t really try my freshman and sophomore year. My grades have improved because in junior year I had a 3.57 UW and 3.7 W second semester. I’m going to try and get above a 3.8 senior year. I only have 2 APs (ap psych and ap human, 5 on ap psych test) but I took a lot of core classes. I took 2 extra credits of social studies and 2 extra credits of science. I also have one dual credit course which is anatomy and physiology.
I wasn’t involved with much in school, I took key club junior and senior year and plan to take one more club senior year. I do have 30+ hours of volunteering at a place where you help special needs kids.
I really want to get into a decent state school, preferably in Illinois(in state). I’m looking at UIC, UIS, and NIU. I’m also looking at Iowa and Indiana schools. I know I won’t get into some top university but I also don’t want to go to a community college. What schools can I get into?

OOS publics and instate IL publics are expensive. How much will your family pay each year?
You can get into some schools…the issue may be budget. If your parents will pay for any school, then you’ll have choices.
@mom2coIIegekids My parents will be paying for it and I will pay some with the money I have saved. Do you think I could get into UIC NIU or DePaul!?
I think you could get into all of them. But if you didn’t get into DePaul, there are other schools that will accept you.
What kind of school do you want?
You can get into schools better than UIC and NIU.
@mom2collegekids really!? Most people I know that went to DePaul or UIC had a 3.4-5 and a 26+ but Its reassuring to hear that they accept below that too. Thanks.I’m looking into state schools that are medium-large preferably public but private is ok too.
UIC and NIU would be safeties for you. DePaul and Loyola are matches, as well as Lake Forest and Elmhurst. Other possibilities: Bradley, Augustana, UWisconsin Superior.
DePaul accepts many applicants, and your stats are ok, so I think you’ll be accepted. Are you going to apply early? If that is possible, do that.
I don’t know if I should do early action or regular decision. Which one would you think would increase my chances?
@MYOS1634 how would they be safeties if I only have a 3.2 and a 23 act?
Because NIU admits most students with a GPA of 3.15+ and 22+. While Chicago is a bit more selective (3.2 average GPA, 23 average ACT), it admits about 80% students who apply meaning that OP is almost sure to get in (the 20% they reject would be kids with GPAs below 3 and ACTs below 21 or 20.) Apply early in the season to both, as far as I can tell they’re “rolling admissions” so you know you have definite possibilities and can relax and apply to “harder” schools.
You’re a bit below what DePaul and Loyola want so if your grades are going to increase, apply RD, and spend time preparing for your ACT retake as well as working on your essays. Use “Essay Hell” an excellent, free website.
Run the NPCs (net price calculators) on each website, both universities you listed and universities I listed.
NIU and UIC are great to start with, perhaps try visiting them both and seeing which you prefer. I’d suggest applying to some “reach schools” as well. DePaul is certainly worth a try. If you have any interest in liberal arts schools, try checking out Luther College; I know some people there who love it.
