Will I get into UNC Chapel Hill next year

Your ECs all scream me…me…me. That will not work in your favor at UNC. The one that stands out is Boys Scout and maybe the science volunteering thing but not sure how much time was spent. I agree, Eagle will help a lot. Just giving you my $0.02. Son and daughter both applied to UNC. DD got in, son did not. Very similar stats.
Also, class rank matters big time at State and it is a tough admit for engineering. Your best bet might be to try something like construction engineering and then CODA into something else if you want that route. State is however much less holistic = better chance for you.
I think you will get into one of the two though! NCSU is a backup for a lot of kids. So, more admits later in the cycle through waitlist and spring admission. Once again, speaking from my limited experience.

Very tough competition for UNC. These days, NC State is no one’s safety anymore either.

Your LOR’s and essays will matter so make sure those are as good as can be.

In the meantime, find additional likely/match colleges that you’d be “ok with” in case UNC doesn’t pan out.

thank you all for responses, what would be some way I could make myself a stronger applicant over the summer, this can include volunteering and other stuff.

Deliver on the test. You said to expect a score so you don’t have yet ??

Summer job or volunteer. Job better.

also if i take calc 3 during this fall through a community college, do colleges like seeing that? Or do they like dual enrollment in general?

You don’t need calc 3. I’d say DE. But you need AB. BC is good too.

There’s no guarantees but going beyond is not scoring brownie points. Do it for you…not for a better shot at admissions.

Here is an interactive data dashboard for UNC-Chapel Hill: Workbook: db_freshmen

On the left-hand side of the dashboard, you can enter different types of parameters in order to manipulate various outcomes. This may help you estimate your chances of admission; although as stock prospectuses like to state, “Past performance is no guarantee of future results.”

is nc state engineering just as hard or slightly easier than chapel ?

Not a fair question. One has engineering in most disciplines. The other doesn’t.

BME is a joint program UNC/NCSU

I think that BME is the only engineering program that UNC has. NCSU is the flagship state engineering school for North Carolina.

Yes, UNC only has BME.

You would probably get into NCSU for FYE. BME is a toughest major to get into so avoid that. I’d apply as Construction or civil engineering. Avoid ChemE and CS.

How important is class rank being top 10%? does that impact my chances severely compared to being in the top 10%?

I think you’re way overthinking. Your record is your record. UNC is a reach let’s say - so make sure you have others on the list too. There’s no silver bullet.

In the last common data set they published, 74% of students were in the top 10% of the class and 94% in the top quarter. Now, of that 20%, we don’t know - were they 11%, 14%, 24%.

So 6% are below the top quarter and that likely includes athletes.

with my stats do you really think unc is a reach? i checked my schools acceptances and almost 90% of people with similar stats got into chapel and nc state. I thought it was a target/ realistic goal. I have friends who got in this year with better gpa but way worse ec’s so I would argue I am on par if not a better applicant than them. what do you think?

it doesn’t matter what I think - it matters what UNC thinks.

You mentioned engineering. What are you looking to study?

In the end, only UNC can answer if you’re getting in or not so you’re spinning your wheels here.

As always, have a balanced list. A balanced list isn’t one unless it’s assured.

So if you have any doubt and you clearly do or you wouldn’t post here, then make sure you have what you deem an affordable safety - whether Wilmington, ECU or whatever - on your list as a just in case.

PS - and you still need a test - and you “assume” a 1480-1500. I wouldn’t assume anything - til I had it.

Good luck.

thanks. I am going to for NC state or chapel. Chapel i will apply business and nc state i will apply engineering. thats because i don’t fully know what i want to do and I am ok with both majors. my safety is UNCC i think.

ive taken sat once before and did terribly. I got a 1350 for my first time even though I was getting around 1450’s on practice tests. But now that i know the test and am comfortable I am confident i can get around 1450+ in june, if not I will take it at least once again in august to get my goal of 1480-1500.

So business and engineering are vastly different - if you’re unsure, you should start engineering…it will be much easier to transfer over than vice versa.

Now, you won’t be applying to business to UNCCH - because their b school doesn’t start until Junior year and it’s another competitive application - so it’s one thing to get into UNC, but then it’s another to get into Kenan Flagler.

btw - your terrible 1350 is above the 90th percentile - so “terribly” is not the word I would use to describle it.

It is a bit low for UNC but within the 25% range (your test). Here is good info on rank and test - go to that section if it doesn’t open - called Rank and Exams

But this is a reasonable strategy - UNC, NC State, and UNCC - but only if UNCC is a school that you’d be happy to attend. What isn’t reaonsable to me - is to apply to one as engineering and the other with a business intention.

btw - with your stats, there are OOS schools you can go to for as cheap as an instate - and maybe cheaper - so you’d have those options too if interested.
