I do not live in Iowa so I would be considered an out of state applicant.
3.71 Unweighted GPA
3.89 Weighted GPA
Top 23% Rank
24 ACT

I know that Iowa uses the RAI for admission. 255 RAI Score required for out of state applicants. If I meet the 255 RAI score, will I automatically get accepted?? Because if I calculated my RAI score right, it would be a 291.

Btw, does anyone know if you can put senior year classes into the RAI Calculation if you have not taken it yet? Or do you only put in the classes you "HAVE TAKEN?" Also, is the GPA weighted or unweighted in the calculation? Thanks so much!

Btw, will I qualify for any scholarships?

The answer is YES, you are automatically accepted if your score exceeds the threshold. There are no additional criteria like essays, etc.

They cannot figure in classes you haven’t taken yet as there are no grades for them to factor into your GPA. They will use your GPA of record at time of application with the caveat that if your grades tank your offer of admittance can be revoked.

Read carefully the page I linked to in my other post about scholarships. You definitely want a 26 ACT for National Scholars. For most Iowa OOS students that’s all they’ll get. Prep hard and re-take.

Wait, the classes I “have not” taken yet do not count in the RAI? what if your RAI score exceeds 290 even with a 24 ACT, can i still get the National Scholars scholarship? i have taken a couple of college classes during high school and if i read correctly, it says specific college classes such as English courses can count in the RAI calculation. i also read that if you have taken spanish in 8th grade, and it can count in the calculation as well? is this true? thanks so much for answering!

here’s a link for this: http://www.regents.iowa.gov/RAI/FAQ122607.pdf

it does say on the NSA scholarship that: “if your HS ranks, you need a 290 or higher RAI to qualify” otherwise, if your HS doesn’t rank, you need a 26 ACT

This may be a good time to utter my usual caveat emptor on this stuff - for definitive word on any of these matters it is best to contact your admissions counselor directly. What you hear from me or any other sage on CC is not necessarily the gospel truth, hard as we try to impart truth at all times. Use this spiffy map to figure out who your counselor is: <a href=“Meet our Admission Counselors”>http://admissions.uiowa.edu/counselors

I believe the GPA number they use will includes only the classes you have taken. I say this with high degree of certainty.

I believe when they calculate core courses completed they WILL include your senior year planned courses including those that count for college credit. Whether they count for college credit or not has no affect on the RAI calculation. As for your 8th grade Spanish, my GUESS is that if it appears on your HS transcript as a HS class, it will count in your RAI. If it didn’t gain you HS credit but simply placed you in a higher level as a 9th grader my guess is that it will not count. I say the above with a moderate degree of certainty.

Concerning the NSA criteria, I believe you are absolutely right in saying that an RAI of 290 means you don’t need the 26 ACT! I failed to read that closely enough.

In five years on CC I have to say that I’ve seen no one parse the RAI calculation quite as thoroughly as you! :)

Best of luck. You’ll obviously be admitted and I think you’ll get NSA with no problem. I also encourage you to look into the Honors Program which has changed but was really nice for my son as a freshman.

Thank you soo much!!
