Hey everybody, this is my first post on CC. My father (custodial parent) suffers from chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis and Avascular Necrosis, and we are greatly below the poverty level. Would I receive financial aid, scholarships, or grants because of these factors? Thank you
You will receive need based aid if your income is low…not because of the health of your parent.
But…how much? A lot will depend on the colleges to,which you apply.
Thank you for the quick response!
Yeah. On a yes or no basis of your question, you will get SOME amount of aid, be it from the college or from the Pell Grant (if you’re below the poverty line, you’ll probably get that). If you are high-achieving, we might be able to recommend some universities with 100% need-based admission based on your stats.
To echo thumper, you will almost definitely not get any money because of your father’s disposition. Sorry to hear, with that being said.
Much will depend on where you apply.
Many schools have very little aid to give no matter what your EFC is.
You may have an EFC 0, but there are schools that will only give a Pell grant of free money, which isn’t much.
Is your mom alive? The schools that give the best aid will use her income, too.
What is your home state?
What are your stats?
There used to be one- Through the Looking Glass. Apparently that’s been discontinued due to a loss of federal funding. Sad… it’s one I applied for in high school.
Anyway, there are very, very few for students with those conditions and there are even less for children of parents with those conditions.
The best financial aid and scholarships will come from the unis themselves and I don’t personally know of any who give you scholarships just for being the child of a disabled parent.
