Hey I got into William and Mary and, due to my being waitlisted at UVA and Wake Forest giving me 0 financial aid, it is now my number one choice. I have visited twice and love the campus, but I am really scared that it does not fit my personality. While I certainly do work hard at school, it is not the only thing that is important to me. I guess my concern is that I am so much different than all of the others going from my school. I have played varsity/jv baseball all four years of high school, so I love sports, and also party both nights of the weekend pretty regularly. I never do homework or study until the night before, but I always find a way to get things done.

Do any current students have any advice? Would a person who is quite social like myself, very bright but not necessarily focused soley on school, regret going to William and Mary? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

I don't party a lot, but I definitely do things the night before... actually I have an Econ test tomorrow that I basically studied today for, meh. If you want to party a lot, you can look into the frat scene, and there are other parties around as well. If you go to parties, you will make social connections with others that go to parties, and you will find out where/when the parties are that the non partying people don't know about.

I love sports too. Actually, I wish the campus as a whole was more into sports, but I think it's getting better. More students are coming to football games (our team was really good in '04). Our basketball team is about to get better, with the 4th year of recruits coming in with our new coach. All our top players are currently freshmen / sophomores. Our attendence will go up in basketball this season, I'm sure of it. In the football playoffs in overtime last year against Delaware, the student section was amazing. Seriously, I never thought I'd see a student section like that at W&M.

There's a solid number of people at the library on football Saturday... but now, there's also a big group at the stadium. For the JMU game this year (they beat us in the National Semi Finals last year) they gave out student tickets to get into the game for free (usually you just show your ID), and 3000 students were at the game. That's a HUGE percentage of the student body.

hope that helped... feel free to ask more, i'll try to answer. The sports culture was actually why I applied I wanted to go to UVA more, but I've found it to be satisfactory here. Our athletes also go to class...

And, the spring game is this Saturday on Admitted Students Day... so if you're coming to that, you can drop by the scrimmage.

How dominant is it, soccerguy?

dominant...? There are definitely other things to do. You can definitely spend your whole time at W&M and never set foot in the frats. You can go to houses / apartments, you can hang out with your friends.

If you hang out with people who go to the frats a lot, then the frat scene will seem more dominant. If you hang out with people who don't go to the frats, then they don't seem like much of campus culture at all.

Thanks, soccerguy!

It seems that GGGunit and I are exactly the same person. I fit his description perfectly and have basically the same question - will I like WM, considering I want a school where there is a decent sports/party scene?

On a regular fall Saturday, will I be able to find a decent number of people who will want to go to the football game in the afternoon then go party at night? Will I have to really seek out these people, or will there be a lot of them?

I, too am like you guys. I think that it will not be a problem to get a pickup football game together and go to a party later. I visitied the school today for the first time and i really liked it. If you just go to the sunken gardens ( grassy fields) and have a football, people would definetly gather to play.

Also there is definitely a strong frat party community here. In fact, today in front of the campus center, there was a bunch of flyers that were advertising "an underground house party."

So i think that at w&m we would be able to have a good time while getting an unparalleled education, and to top it all off, its cheap as well (even for an out-of-stater).

Another note is that there is a nice off campus setting. The area before colonial williamsburg is really nice. Nice shops, and some nice places to eat, liek the Cheese Shop. So yeah, i think i will be attending in the fall.

If you are expecting a huge party/frat scene, you'll probably be dissappointed. What we have here is sufficient to a lot of people. Frat parties are basically all the same. For sports, our basketball team sucks but we have a really nice stadium. I for one love going to football games (I painted my face for 2 games this year), but our stadium is a little small (~11,000 capacity). Basically, what I'm saying is if you come here expecting it to be like UVa or some other big party school you'll hate it, but if you take W&M for what it is, I think you can have a good time here. I'm a current member of a social fraternity on campus, so if you need to know anything else about W&M's social scene ask me.
