Will I succeed in engineering school?

Hey, Im currently a senior in high school and lets just say my grades wasn't what they should have been. To start off im not a bad student at all. Ive never been sent to the principles office, or gotten in any kind of trouble. In fact, people that I meet actually believe I'm really smart by the way I hold myself (not to sound conceited or anything). Coming into high school I always believed college "just happened" So I went through school making C's and some D's and I think 2 F's. The main problem with my grades is I never studied! I was just lazy. I wasted my time watching TV and playing drums. It wasn't until I visited schools with my sister whose an honor student and is currently on a scholarship to one of the top schools in Florida that I realized just how much I screwed up. Going into my next couple years I thought since I was at such a disadvantage that I would take as many AP classes to make up for the slack I've been doing and to show schools that I've changed...that was probably the worst decision I made in high school. My grades bombed even more because I still didn't change my study habits. So far in my senior year with better study habits im doing pretty good, all B's and a couple C's and i'm taking AP gov/econ.

Onto my actual question. I really love computers, they always grabbed my attention plus the job possibilities are amazing! I always wanted to be an officer in the Air Force so I decided that I'm going to major in Computer Science and be a cadet in ROTC.I applied to 4 major universities in Florida and to no surprise I got denied by all 4. So I'm going to attend Santa Fe college then try to Transfer to the University Of Florida. I'm really determined to do my best in college after messing around in high school. I'm going to have good study habits and block out distractions. To get the best job possible in the military your GPA weighs for almost all of the selection. And having a Tech degree will defiantly help me stand out...but that's if I actually do good. I talked to the ROTC recruiter at UF and he said the Air Force would rather take a Spanish Major with a 3.8 GPA over a physics major with a 2.1 GPA. They want to be shown that you are smart. Since you sorta know my back ground do you believe I will survive in engineering school? Or am I blinded by all the self hype of changing my ways and doing great in college, but when I get to my first class I'll regret ever picking this major? And being in Gainsville I would LOVE to play drums for the University of Florida marching band. But that will open the door to one of the major distractions I had in high school plus hours upon hours of rehearsal. Is this a good idea or should I give up on that idea. Any tip will help no matter how small! I would also appreciate any study tips! Thanks for all your help!!

Keep your GPA up, and know your transfer requirements. Make sure you’re taking the right classes. You’ll probably need CS, math, and english, and some combination of physics and/or chemistry, check to make sure you’re on track. High school GPA shouldn’t matter much if you can get yourself turned around and on a good track in college.

Also, loving computers doesn’t make CS the right major for you… If you love problem solving, math, building things, etc, then you’re probably okay though. :> You’ll probably have an idea of whether or not you like it after taking your first programming class.

As for study tips, go to class and do your homework. Doing practice problems helps a lot. If you’re struggling, find help early on.
