Well, first let me tell you a little about myself.

I'm a senior at Boone high school. I live in Orlando,Florida and I been wanting to be a computer engineer for maybe a little over a year. I basically can do anything I put my mind too. But I get distracted easily. Due to me messing around my freshmen year and kind of my sophomore year, I did poorly but making up two classes by the end of the year. By the end of the year I should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher ( I regret not doing good my first 2 years).
Now my question to you is.

1) Do you think any university will accept me? (be honest, I won't cry)

2) Should I go to Valencia(community college) and then transfer to a university?

3) If I go to Valencia and apply to transfer, will the university reject me due to my high school GPA?

4) Also, If I transfer which school is best for computer engineering, UF,UCF,FSU,FIT, or any other college in Florida?

5) Also, What is the main difference between computer science and computer engineering?

Any other suggestion will help, so feel free.

I wouldn’t really pay much attention to the schools under 5% (unless you can throw a football 40 yards on a rope and hit a moving target) but the others seem possible with a good SAT score. USF wouldn’t be a bad option at all.

That’s up to you. A CC is a great option for many people. I know that people on this website thumb their noses at CC’s, but CC’s are cheaper than 4 year schools, allow you to complete the courses that are typically “GPA killers” at 4 year programs, and often allow you to graduate from a better school that you would otherwise attend as a freshman (and no one cares where you went to school as a freshman - all that’s important is the name on your diploma).

Most colleges weight your CC performance more than your high school performance. In fact, some top schools (for example Georgia Tech) only look at the CC performance and completely ignore SAT and high school grades.

So you could graduate high school with the minimum possible GPA taking 0 AP courses, and have a 600 SAT score, but if you go to a CC and earn a 4.0 GPA while taking difficult technical classes, you can get into one of the top 5 schools in the country for engineering.

if it helps, I graduated with like a 2.4 GPA near the bottom of my class. I got on the spot admission to FIU and got rejected from UCF. Did two years and worked hard at FIU, then transferred to Purdue for EE.

As long as you get a high GPA completing all your prereqs to transfer as a junior, you will be fine.

You could do like many people and go to Santa Fe up in gainesville and then transfer to UF (since they get priority when applying)

I haven’t taken the SAT yet But I’m taking the ACT in February. I’m not sure because on my transcript it has two GPA’s and one says District and the other says State…

So in that same topic, I can go to a CC and do really good. Then get into any school like Georgia Tech, even if i went to a CC in Florida and not in Georgia?

Post your classes and your grade in each and we’ll calculate your unweighted GPA.

Well, not any school. Most colleges consider your CC grades + HS grades + SAT/ACT scores. However, CC grades count more and HS grades count less if you transfer after 2 years.

Some (but including some top schools) just consider CC grades and the classes you’ve taken at the CC and ignore HS grades and SAT/ACT for transfers. Where you went to CC (Florida or Georgia) doesn’t matter, except that some CC students get priority in special cases (UF has a deal that gives Santa Fe students priority, GT has a deal that gives some Georgia Perimeter students priority, etc).

Freshmen year-
Eng 1-B
Lang Arts-C (elective)
Alg 1a-C
Integ Sci 1-D
Global studies-D
LRNG Strag-A (elective)
Those two D’s are soon to be A’s, Those are all regular classes.

Sophomore year-
Inten Read-B ( Mess around freshmen year and Failed the Fcat) 2 periods, 2 credits,1 counted as elective.
ENG 2-C
ALG 1b-C
BIO 1-C
World Hist-B
SKLs Stu DF HardHear-B (elective)
All regular classes

Junior year-
Smart Home/Mobi electronics-A
Skls Stu DF Hard-hear-A
ENG 3-C
GEO-B
AMER Hist-B
The first “A” counted as 3 AP credit( Tech Dual enrollment) Which also has some credits if I go to Valencia.

Senior year- Not Completed but Currently have 6 A’s and 1 B.and most likey going to continue like that. Taking One Honor class.

So if i graduate high school with a 3.0 or higher and then go to valencia for 2 years and maintained a GPA of 3.7-4.0, Do you think UF or Georgia Tech will except me?

Does your school erase those classes from the transcript, or does it list them but exclude them from the GPA calculation?

What are these?

You’ll need to talk to someone familiar with UF transfer admissions, but if you take the correct classes, you will be very competitive at GT with a 3.7+ CC GPA. For CompE, you can go to GT or GT-Savannah to earn a degree.

Calc I - MAC 2311
Calc II - MAC 2312
English I - ENC 1101
English II - ENC 1102
Chemistry I with lab - CHM 1046
Physics I (calculus based) with lab - PHYS 2048
Physics II (calculus based) with lab - PHYS 2049
Intro to CS - COP 2220

Then you’ll probably want to take something like AMH 2010 to meet GT’s US History requirement.

Pass all of those classes with a 3.7+ GPA in your first year and you should have no problem getting into GT as a transfer student.

I would think they would erase them and enter the new grades. I’m pretty sure they do.

Smart Home/Mobile electronics- its a class that is taken at another school( like a tech school). Basically I leave for 3 periods and come back to school 4th period. It counts as 3 AP credits. Also, it give me some credits for/if I go to Valencia.

Skills for Students that are Heard of hearing- Since I am deaf from my left ear, when i transfer to Boone they require me to take that class. It’s counts as a elective, I really don’t know why there put me in that class because I don’t know ASL and I hear perfectly fine from my right ear.

So when I go to sign up for my classes at Valencia, Do i just show the chart to the guidance counselor and tell him/her that those are the classes i want to take?

You need the Chart + the GT transfer equivalencies. If you say “I need Physics I” and the adviser puts you in a Physics I class that’s not accepted by GT (only PHYS 2048 is accepted), you will not be able to apply to GT. To be able to even apply to GT, you need to have passed:

Fall 2011 -
MAC 2311
ENC 1101
PHYS 2048
CHM 1046 or COP 2220

Spring 2012 -
MAC 2312
ENC 1102
PHYS 2049
CHM 1046 or COP 2220

Then you apply to GT in Summer 2012. If accepted, you would take classes at Valencia in Fall 2012 and start at GT Spring 2013.

But you’ll want to talk to people at UCF and UF to determine their requirements so that if you don’t get into GT, you can transfer to one of those schools. They probably have a very similar 1st year requirements for a CS/CompE transfer.

It will give a list of courses offered at Valencia approved for transfer to GT. If you take a class that’s not on the list at Valencia, you probably won’t receive any credit at GT for that course (you might - it goes through an approval process - but you should really stick to the classes on the list to prevent wasting your time and money).

dont stress out my brother had even worse credentials then you and he is happy at UCF right now. Just go to valencia and keep applying. eventually they will take you. Your high school grades are a little important but they wont matter if you are pulling As in your college classes. Remember pick the florida school you want to go to. If its UF then apply after ur in UCF. If you really want to go to a school eventually you will get their even if its for grduate school

If you want to apply to Georgia Tech as a CompE or CS major, you should tell your adviser to register you for:

Fall 2011 -
MAC 2311
ENC 1101
PHYS 2048
CHM 1046 or COP 2220

Spring 2012 -
MAC 2312
ENC 1102
PHYS 2049
CHM 1046 or COP 2220

Those are the 8 classes you need to apply to Georgia Tech. The only time you should deviate is if a class isn’t being taught that semester or if there’s a time conflict. If that’s the case, then you’ll need to make up the class in Summer 2012 and apply to GT in Fall 2012.

But before doing that, check with someone at UCF and UF to make sure that schedule satisfies the requirements to transfer to those two schools, as well.
