Will it be weird and is it common? I don’t want to look like a creep especially since the prof is a female.
I have this thing where I learn and retain the information better if I see it twice.

Just be low key… Would probably be easier to just record audio on an ipad or laptop
But I want to actually be able to see what is being taught. Is it not allowed? Will a prof be uncomfortable with me doing it every day?
You have to ask for the prof’s permission.
I’m scared to ask the prof though. I don’t want to come off as a total creeper. I was thinking of getting one of those camera glasses or camera hat. So the prof will never find out. And the other students shouldn’t be able to find out unless they look super closely.
Ask the prof for permission and explain to him that you are a strong visual learner. Not a strong auditory learner.
It will help you to faster learn what he is teaching. And that you have no intention of broadcasting what you record.
@LeviAckermen …this has to be a joke.
Asking the professor if you can record his or her class and explaining why is totally reasonable and normal, while trying to hide the camera or wearing a “camera” hat is INCREDIBLY creepy.
I have to echo what the others are saying right now; ask the professors for permission. If you provide ample explanation, most would probably not mind you doing this. However, secretly bringing a camera and recording the lesson is both questionable behavior and CAN violate the professors’ policies regarding recordings of lectures.
Some professors don’t allow recording of audio or visual means. Some don’t mind. If you started secretly recording lectures, you could be violating the professors’ policies of not allowing that stuff, since some strictly do NOT want what is shown in class to go outside of the class except in written notes.
wear a GoPro on your head and say you’re gonna go skydiving after class
Absolutely clear it first.
Since videos can be cut and edited, lots of people are NOT comfortable with the idea that they could be misrepresented as a result.
Many colleges have a “no recording without permission” policy. It is absolutely essential that you clear it with the professor first - who probably will be open to it once you explain your learning style. Do you already do the record-and-watch-later thing or are you thinking about trying it in the future? Most people who try it find that it ends up taking way too much time to be effective.
You can’t record a professor’s lecture without permission. I would recommend taking notes like millions of other students.
Some of my professors recorded their own lectures and uploaded them online for students to watch, so maybe you’ll get lucky and get professors like that.
But I am in agreement with everyone else: ask permission and absolutely don’t wear a camera hat. That’s creepy and is probably grounds for some sort of punishment.
Yeah, definitely do not record without the professor’s permission. Note that in some states you need the permission of both parties to record anything, so you could even end up on the wrong side of the law if you record without permission. (It’s unlikely to blow up into anything, but it is a point to keep in mind.)
Many professors will be fine with it. I’m going to admit that I’d be a little uncomfortable with it - I’d want to know why video-recording me would be preferable to an audio recording and following along with the slides posted after class, like what additional information you felt like that would add to the course. Audio recording I would absolutely approve without a second thought, but video recording would give me pause.
Yup absolutely have to ask the prof. Besides just being the right thing to do, videotaping someone without their permission might be illegal depending on your state.
@stradmom
I’m only taking 1 class in college since I’m still a HS student. I just want to record this one class so I can refer back to it. Since I’m taking Japanese, I would prefer if I could get a good video of what’s shown since my handwriting ability sucks. If I try to take take notes which means drawing the characters, the characters would probably look sloppy and be wrong.
Unless it’s better to bring in a camera and take pictures instead…
Spend the summer working on your handwriting.
• It’s unlikely that the instructor will be introducing characters that are not in the current chapter of the text.
• In addition the instructor’s permission, you need to consider the other students. Foreign language classes are highly interactive, which means that students will be participating in the class as well. It’s unlikely that the instructor will set up a camera-free zone for those students who do not want to be filmed.
@LeviAckermen that makes more sense. Maybe a camera would do it … or perhaps there will be handouts. When I took a very, very basic Japanese class in college it was almost completely verbal skills in the classroom and the written work was done with the textbook, but I’m sure your experience will differ.
@LeviAckermen As someone who self taught themselves Japanese (mind you, I’m not in college yet, I’ll be matriculating in the fall), I can assure you that there are MILLIONS of videos/charts/people online who can demonstrate how to properly write characters if your writing makes it difficult to understand. There are even videogames and apps that can help you. I don’t think you should go all spy-camera without permission, but I understand your concern. Good luck with Japanese!
