Will it look bad to colleges that my scores decreased with each sitting?

1st sitting (06/2012): 1680 (540 CR, 560 M, 580 W)
2nd sitting (11/2012): 1640 (510 CR, 550 M, 580 W)
3rd sitting (12/2012): 1590 (520 CR, 520 M, 550 W)

I'm applying to UMass Lowell, UMass Amherst, Suffolk University and Northeastern University (reach school). My scores are low, but I've been told my academics and other stuff make up for it.

GPA: 4.15 (W), around 3.8 (UW)
Rank: 21/498
Extra-curriculars: Key Club (2012-present), Mock Trial (2011-present, captain)
Honors: National Honor Society (2012-present), History Honor Society (2012-present)
Awards: Student Overall Achievement Recognition Award (5 given out, one per department, I got mine for history), AP USH highest average award.
AP: 4 APs this year (AP Calc AB, AP Euro, AP English Lit, AP Psychology), got 3s on my AP English Lang. and AP USH exams.
Volunteer work: 4 hours/week at local animal shelter, been doing so since 04/2011.

To answer your question, yes it’ll look bad.

I made the same mistake of practicing for the SAT. I got 1400 (I was sleeping l0l), 1670, and 1670. After that, I knew that the SAT wasn’t for me…

I went to take the ACT in Dec. and got a 27 with minimal practice. I’m proud of that score as it is my first time taking it.

If you can, my advice would be try to take the ACT if the colleges that you applied to will accept it!

Yes it would look bad. That’s why you’d only send your first test score, with no need to superscore. As already said you may want to try the ACT.

Thank you both. I was concerned because I looked up the schools on Collegeboard and they all say I need to send all, and they’ll consider the highest, and UML requires all and they look at all of them. I really don’t want to send all of them, because I think it looks bad too.

Some schools that ask you to send all scores actually have a computer do the figuring, so the actual reader may not even see your full testing history, just your highest scores.

Only U. Mass on your list req. sending ALL scores. For the others send only your 1 best.

Where are you reading that UMass requires all scores?

When I went to College Board to send scores. It shows the req. same as Yale, Cornell, Upenn, Gtown, and CMU.

We got the same warning for every single school, even those that do not require them. I think it’s just a reminder to check?

Nope. Umass Lowell and the others I listed above show a different message. “Requires that you submit ALL SAT scores from ALL test dates”.

I just checked, you will get a warning for every single school, telling you what their parameters are, you have to read them carefully, for example for Bucknell you will get “Highest Section - Version 1” which translates to “<university x=”"> has indicated that it considers your highest section scores across all SAT test dates that you submit. Feel free to send any additional scores that you want to make available to <university x="">." </university></university>

And UMass is not listed on College Boards list of schools thate even specify what their requirements are so I am going to respectfully disagree with you.

Hi Runs, When I went to actually send scores from my sons account I got the Req. same as the schools I listed above. If you tried that, are you seeing something different? All his other schools showed the message you’re referring too. Thx

I am going to do some googling. To be quite honest I am a little nervous now, my son chose not to send his SAT I scores and just sent subject tests. I was sitting right there and did not see that, but I will keep looking. Apologies to OP! There is a pdf version of schools that do not allow score choice and other variations but I can not link to it as it is a pdf that opens on the computer.

Hi Runs, I’m wondering if it only pops up when someone is actually sending scores from an actual account? That’s where I got the message when sending my son’s scores .Thankfully it’s over for my son, he got into UPenn Early decision. Penn required ALL Sat scores also. Let me know what you find out?? Thx

I have decided not to worry about it. He applied to UMass Amherst and I can find nothing on their website about it and I have stressed over this process enough! His ACT score is great so I don’t care if they disregard his subject tests, they are not required anyway. Congrats on your son’s acceptance!

Hi Runs, You are ALL GOOD. U. Mass. Amherst does NOT require ALL scores sent!!! Lowell DOES. Good Luck!!!

Thanks to everyone who replied, and I hope that everyone who had questions as well had them solved. UML requires ALL scores, the other 3 schools I’m applying to do not. Do you guys think that my scores decreasing will hurt me?

Scissors - I think what your son did was ok. I don’t believe you have to send in your
SAT I scores if you sent in a ACT. I think that they will look at the SAT II’s. I think you have to send in all SAT I scores if you send in any SAT I scores…

To OP, just use score choice where you can, and for the others, assume they look at the highest scores. Try not worry about it. Stressful I know. Good luck with your apps!
