I scored a 212 on the PSAT in Michigan and therefore became a semifinalist. I recently took the SAT and got a 2070 (1390 CR + M)...will this be enough to be a finalist? Has anyone ever called NMC about this? I'm reluctant to call mainly because I'm not sure which number is the appropriate one to call. Any help would be appreciated.

Only 50 point difference? Please. Of course you'll make it.

You are a shoe in. Don't worry. You'll be happy.

do you have to be a PSAT semifinalist to be a SAT merit finalist?

The PSAT is also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. You get NMS from the PSAT. To make finalist you have to fill out paperwork, get recs, have good grades and your SAT has to be good (no one shot wonders).

My son just got his scores for the PSAT today does anyone know where I go to see if he qualifies for the Hispanic National Merit Scholar in Texas?

Yes, you'll definitely get it. Do you know when we find out?

are recs really required? I remember an essay, but I don't remember asking for recs or being told to do so. Is it mostly based on the corroborating SAT and GPA, with only a significant blemish excluding you from finalist status?

I talked with NM yesterday out of curiosity. My S is a Junior and has a chance to be NMSF. She said this year you need a minimum of 1300 M+CR with a subscore of 51 in Writing. She would not explain the subscore to me so I do not know what that means. But she said they look at the whole picture, not just test scores. Your GPA is important as well as your EC's.

Thanks wemel!! Also the subscore means the MC score of your writing section. I got a 65 on the MC and a 10 on the essay. What a relief.

One of my son's freinds took the PSAT last October (2005) and got a 219.
He has not been contacted by anyone about being a semifinalist (Michigan)or even being commended. Who notifies students about their National Merit status? Is it the high school or does the the NMSC send something directly to the student? Our highschool is very bad about getting information to students. I thought 219 was a great score for Michigan and was surprised that he was'nt a semifinalist, but maybe I just don't understand how this works. If there is anyone that can help me get this straight, I'd appreciate it. This has me worried!!

Wow that is alarming, he should have recieved semifinalist notification from his school last october...he should talk to his counselor at school and then NM if they can't help him. At this point I think it's too late to do anything but the semifinalist cutoff was a 211.
