Ok so I'm basically a good student. B average in the toughest schedule I could possibly take in my high school. National Honors Society member, boys state, varsity athletics all four years, 2090 on my sat. However, I just do not get physics. Not to make excuses for my poor grade, but my teacher wasn't the best instructor. Will better colleges be able to look past this struggle or should I stick to safety schools because of this grade...?

by the way, I am being recruited by bowdoin for track and field. but i’m afraid when they find out about my physics grade they might run away scared.

any love? i’m freaking out man

You are in a far from ideal situation, but because you are a recruited athlete none of us here have the knowledge/experience to speak to your specific situation.

athletics aside, what does this mean? even with the crap grade, I am still in the top 10% of my class. I still have my sat and extra curriculars, and I will get very good letters of rec. Also I’m a pretty good writer and my essay will definitely help sway a decision. I’m not talking about getting into Ivies here, I just want to know WHERE I should be applying to. Like I said, physics is really my only hiccup, but it prevents me from having the good number. My SAT is decent, so I’m really really really confused as to what to do and what schools I can actually fit into. Anyone else with a similar experience struggling in a single class?

bump as my self confidence plummets

@markchalo we can’t give you an answer without all your exact stats (GPA, SAT, ECs).

You need to apply to a range of schools because of your situation. It’s fine to aim high as if the D doesn’t exist, but definitely apply to several good target and safety schools where you could be happy and the cost is affordable. Work hard on your essay and the other things in your applications that are within your control.

It certainly possible that you could be accepted at a school like Bowdoin which considers your application holistically, so it’s worth applying if that’s your dream school. But, remain open to other possibilities that are less selective, as well. Many less selective schools can provide you just as high quality of an education and undergrad experience.

Our school is really big with only using weighted GPA. My weighted is about a 4.6, which puts me easily in the top 10%. All honors and AP classes so difficulty is 100%. My grades show clear strength in history, english, biology and weakness in math, physics.

SAT sitting score is 2090. 670 Math, 690 Critical Reading, 730 Writing.

My EC’s aren’t anything insane like I’ve seen on here, but pretty good for an athletics centered guy. I’m the mock trial lead attorney, National Honors Society Member, Boys State delegate, and I also have significant experience in coaching and mentoring youth sports. I received an award from the West Point Society of New Jersey called the Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership award, and was invited to attend an awards ceremony at West Point if that means anything at all. Then of course there’s my athletics, which I have to admit I put the most effort into. Going to finish with 4 years varsity of both track and field and soccer, as well as captain positions in each. I won 3 all county awards so far.

Aside from my clear weakness, I’d like to think I’m a pretty holistic applicant. I wish I was a little more school centered and had the numbers to be much more competitive, but as they say hindsight is always 20/20.

If it’s any comfort, our S had a mixed record in tough math classes in HS (Cs almost every year). He ended up outside the top 10%, but otherwise had an impressive application both academically and otherwise. He was accepted at a top 10 LAC. So, it’s fine to aim high. You’ll never know if you don’t apply.

that’s actually a lot of comfort. thanks a lot.

bump it up

yes bump it up

please and thanks

bumpbumpbump

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump

anyone have any experience at all with one sub par grade?

can anyone else help me out or is it time to give up now?
