I got an interview at Shanghai and I live in other part of china, taking a little bit more than 1 h to get there by flight. Does it sound like a cheapskate if I ask the ad com what they will cover? What do they usually cover?

This is no time to quibble about a few hundred dollars when they are offering you an invaluable opportunity.
Take the train if you can’t afford the flight.

I’d say it’s perfectly reasonable to ask what transportation/hotel costs they cover. Every institution I’m interviewing at (biology) covers airfare and hotels.

Batllo, not everyone has a few hundred dollars. I had to choose to not apply to a 5th school because I just don’t have the $70 for the application, and I’m having trouble scrapping together the money for transportation for interviews because one won’t reimburse until after. I know many PhD applicants come from wealthy, elite-type families, but some of us don’t, and finances is a huge limitation in even applying.

I appreciate all your replies! I just realize shanghai is farther than I thought… but I’ll go anyway and will leave the question till later when the school gives me more details on the interview. Thanks!
