Who pays costs when you are asked to fly in for interview?

A few admission reps have told me I am a strong candidate for some of their larger merit scholarships. These require flying to the campus in Jan or Feb for an interview. Does the school cover the cost of airfare and hotel? Or air if you stay in the dorm during the interview process? Just curious as I forgot to ask.

Generally speaking, yes, your flight/train fare would be paid for and the university would make overnight (in a dorm) and meal arrangements.

It probably depends upon which school and/or which scholarship. You should simply call them back and ask. You’ll need to know because some schools may require that you book reservations through certain carriers or there may be other constraints you need to know on the front end to ensure you are reimbursed.

It all depends on the school…and sometimes on the specific scholarship. Contact them and ask.

It depends. D visited a college for a scholarship interview weekend in 2014. Airfare was not covered. Transportation to and from the airport, all meals, outings in the city, and housing in the dorms was provided for her. Hotel for a parent was not covered but several meals for parents were included. If I remember correctly, they promised to up the scholarship offer for everyone who attended, even if they were not offered the top scholarships.

YMMV.

A few years back, my son was asked to fly to Chicago for a Scholarship Weekend. We paid the airfare for the round trip, and we got 50% reimbursement after the weekend. The school also let my son to eat and sleep in a dorm without charge.

Ask…and ask for amounts.

Some pay, some don’t, and some give X amount (like $200).

@thumper1 I will ask when I get invited if it is not spelled out. I’m just planning ahead and not really referring to any specific scholarship since I have not been invited yet. Just wondering what the usual policy is. From the above posts it looks like it varies from school to school. Hoping that these scholarship weekends don’t fall on the same weekend.
