I think your fine! I'm Haitian/ one-quarter German but my mother looks entirely German (really weird) but I look African-american. I think ClaySoul is right, it definetly isn't just about URM's anymore, although that sometimes does play a role in the likability of a candidate I suppose. I speak German and Haitian creole (which is broken down french) but I don't think they'll look at my name (which is completely french but my last names german) and make a judgment on that. Just sit back & relax! Good Luck! :)

p.s. most likely you had to indicate your ethnicity on the app. so that might b a giveaway (lol)

fireandrain -- don't be a ridiculous (insert explitive here)

I didn't say he (or she!) couldn't be rich, I said he couldn't be rich and WHITE. If you are half Argentinean, you are not white, you are multiracial.

Go take some classes on the values of different cultures and you will see how vastly different world views are from culture to culture and how it affects people of that culture. It creates diversity.

I don't know if an Argentinean will count, probably not, as there is no Argentinean constituency in the U.S. Moreover, Argentinian's are, according to [Wikipedia[/url], largely European, and thus are to some extent analogous to someone whose Mother was a Boer claiming to be African-American.

Most Argentines are descended from colonial-era settlers and from the 19th and 20th century immigrants from Europe, with around 86 % of Argentina's population self-identifying as of European descent.[73]

Might there be a downside to claiming URM if the Adcoms don't buy it? Here is an example of someone claiming URM who was rejected, when otherwise he looked to be a very strong candidate as a non-URM. Maybe claiming the URM hurt? No way to tell.

But how does one claim to be an URM? The Common App allows applicants to both list their parents country of birth and check multiple ethnicities. It does not ask whether you are an URM, that is up to adcoms to decide. For the OP, how could listing his or her Argentine and White ethnicities possibly work against him or her? After all, the OP is not directly claiming to be disadvantaged by simply answering the question of ethnicity. It would be a different story if the question read "Are you an URM?" and the OP answered yes.

I'm sorry to be randomn but does it matter if ur a URM or not? As a URM myself I don't think it will hurt u or help u! Damn...all you guys getting heated over something that may not even be considered in ur application. Hahahaha. This is funny.

dude where did i accuse you? the explitive thing was a joke, because you aren't even allowed to write things like nincompoop on this board, (watch that get censored).

i was clarifying that you misunderstood what i was saying in a fashion that completely changed its meaning and made me look a wee bit racist...oy, the internet...

i took a class on cultural values. i was recommending it.

Brown admits many students who are reported to the federal government as "race/ethnicity unknown," so it is not strictly necessary to self-identify at all.

I have a friend whose father is Italian with an Italian name, and a white Hispanic mother (Argentinian, in fact). Her mom actually has no indigenous blood and isn't Catholic (as the majority of Latin Americans are). But what was important was that her mother fully identified as being Hispanic and brought that into my friend's upbringing. She looks like any other Italian-Jew from Long Island. On her app, she checked off both Caucasian and Hispanic, and she got into Brown.

@superwoman, Haitian Creole is its own, fully functioning, independent language--not just "broken down French."

Haha, my writing creole is horrible! But that's true. I just don't know how to explain to someone that its derived from all these languages! lol
