Will this help me into UPenn?

In about 7 months I will be sending my Early Decision application to Wharton (Penn business school). Thus far my GPA is full 4 unweighted, whilst doing the IB diploma, and my SAT scores are mediocre though I will get them into the 2200+ range.

What I really wanted to ask though was, if I started a business that was making about 500 USD of revenue a month, and put that on my application (talked about it in the 150 word EC part, and possibly the longer essay), would it help my application?

If so, would it make a BIG difference (don't think many students at all start a business in their junior year)?

Would the fact that I am applying as an international student help me in any way (as I presume there are fewer international high school students starting a business than there are US students)?

Thanks a lot guys!

Edit: Other than that my EC's and work experience are relatively strong (some are related to business if that helps at all), so are my prospective recommendations.

That sounds great! Show true passion for it and shine it in the right light and I’m sure it could be a selling point.

it surely helps, however, i wouldn’t recommand u to do so since its time consuming and not really official- unless u can turn it into a pro essay

Make sure you are you able to explain WHY you’re doing it. It sounds great if you can pull it off! Good luck to you.

Actually, I’ve heard plenty of stories of kids starting their own businesses. . .most of them just start babysitting or mowing lawns and are able to pass that off as a real business. One of my best friends started a “computer company”; he worked on 2 computers and made $150 but hyped it up to make it sound like he started Apple in his basement. As a result of things like this, a lot of universities really question kids that claim to have created their own businesses. If you think you can do well without sacrificing grades/scores/ec’s though and are able to write a convincing essay about the startup, then I can’t see it hurting you. Best of luck to you on becoming a Whartonite

I wrote about it in my short answer part on Common app (150 words) as opposed to the personal statement. My business is the following:

We take glass and utilize to create new and innovative furniture which we sell. We do it because there are no mainstream glass recyclers in Hong Kong. We keep some of the money as profit and the rest goes to charity. We basically didnt have the 300USD required to become a legit business so we slowly made more and more and eventually when we got 300USD, we used our initial profits to become and official business.

Re the international part, if anything it will hurt you. International applicants usually self-select so the admit rates are deceiving. At least they aren’t MIT though lol… 3%

What do you mean by self-select?

That’s nice but really, no person in his or her right sense would come onto the forum and post crap about his or her achievements because, in doing so, he or she would not be gaining anything useful; I know I wouldn’t. If your going to ■■■■■, do it well.
