Will transferring from community college to a 4-year affect my chances of going to a good medschool?

As I was unfortunately unable to get into my first choice undergrad university, will transferring to it from a community college highly affect my chances of getting into a good med school? (I also have the option of going to a state school, but I would like to avoid doing so as I have heard that state schools are not the best places to go to for premed.)

Med schools aren’t going to care if you go to a JC before attending a 4-year. As long as you keep your grades up at a JC you will be fine. Lots of people go to a JC to save money, not just because they can’t get into a 4-year school. One factor though is that going to a 4-year will probably present more volunteer/research opportunities that are crucial for your med school apps.

Some medical schools may want to see some biology, chemistry, physics, or math courses completed after you transfer to a four year school, since they may have a low opinion of community colleges. If you will be majoring in one of those subjects, that should not be a problem, since you will be taking upper division course work in such a subject for your major after transfer. If your major is something else (e.g. humanities or social studies), consider taking some courses in those sciences at the four year school after transfer.
