Willamette Merit Amount

Stats really don’t matter as long as you are around the average: focus on taking cool classes and writing good essays.

Assume that the Willamette Net Price Calculator gives a net cost of, say, $40,000 (taking into account the need-based award only). A student gets a $15,000 Willamette merit scholarship. What effect, if any, does the $15,000 have upon the need-based award? Is the need-based award reduced by $15,000, leaving the student no better off? Or does the student get the benefit of the entire $15,000, or something in between?

Any help on this issue would be appreciated, as it will determine whether it makes financial sense for our son to apply to Willamette this fall.

When we used the Willamette NPC it calculated “Willamette Scholarships” at an amount that was exactly the same as the merit award the school ultimately offered my son. It also listed $5,500 in Federal loans and $2,000 in student employment. When we received his actual offer, there was no mention of student employment, but there was an additional Jason Lee (need based) award of $5,000. This award is especially nice because it is guaranteed for all four years without filling out the FAFSA.

Our actual aid may have been higher because the NPC was out of date and tuition had increased, but I’m not certain. But you should not assume that “Willamette Scholarships” is need based, rather than merit. All I do know is that even with merit aid, our package, which included $5,500 in Federal direct student loans, had us out of pocket for pretty much exactly what the FAFSA said our EFC is.

Since the application is free if you apply online using Willamette’s application form, I’d say it makes financial sense for your son to apply and see what happens. You won’t know what they’ll offer until you receive a letter of acceptance and an award of financial aid.

ACCEPTED! Nice finance offer, visited overnight for Bearcat Day, nice campus, wonderful coach, very nice students with whom I stayed with. Attended a class in Philosophy, my major, small class size. Amtrak station near campus for trips to Portland and airport, State Capital and Hospital next door for internships. NOW to decide-Cal Poly SLO, University of Redlands or Willamette University?

@uwphoto48, what did you decide? My daughter is trying to decide between Redlands, Willamette, and Western Washington. We’ll be visiting Willamette next Bearcat Day and revisiting Western Washington as well. We had a nice experience at Redlands at the admitted students day last weekend. She enjoyed the campus vibe, as well as talking with some of the students, professors, and staff, All schools have made nice financial offers, so that helps! She has no idea what she wants to study in college, though.

Was offered $24,000 in merit. GPA: 3.731; 4.431 weighted. ACT: 30. 3 AP’s.

Curious if any legacy students got merit offers. DD (junior) will be applying, I am an alum. She is IB with about a 4.3 W gpa and 1330 new SAT
